Would Michigan (or other Big 10) team make a new rivalry with Cal

A great fanpost from our buddy Carp over at Cal Golden Blogs. Michigan does need a new OOC rival, or at least competitor. I'd say we've already got these "west coast rivalry games" with Oregon, but they keep beating us. Badly. Dammit.

What do people think? Cal as a good matchup? - Maize n Brew Dave

I posted a FanPost at Cal Golden Blogs which discussed making a new rivalry game.  Several Cal fans chose Michigan and Wisconsin as possible teams.  I don't follow the Wolverines closely, but I think Michigan already has 3 rivalry games (Mich St., Ohio St., Notre Dame?) and doesn't really need to add new traditions to an established program with a rich history.  Cal has recently played Tennessee, Michigan St., and Minnesota.  They have Colorado and Ohio St scheduled for future years.

I think the Pac-10 and the Big-11 need each other as the SEC and Big-12 dominate this year.  The Pac-10 and some members of the Big-11 schedule tough out of conference games.  The general consensus is that establishing a rivalry with ranked non-BCS schools isn't as good as establishing a rivalry with an established BCS school regardless of ranking.  The goal is to boost interest, publicity, rankings, recruiting, etc instead of throwing down $55 to watch Louisianna Tech play for about 5 minutes.

What do the bloggers at Maize n Brew think?   Would Michigan be interested?  Any thoughts on other Big-11 schools like Wisconsin or Michigan St. since they don't have SBN blogs?

Any opinions expressed in Fanposts or Fanshots are not the opinions of Maize n Brew.

Totally agree. Cal would be a great matchup.

I have been a life long Michigan fan who grew up on the SF Bay Area, so I have a soft spot for Cal as well. They are a distant second, of course, but I always thought that a UM/UC matchup was a natrual fit.

The two universities are very similar. Highly rated and respected academically. Very liberal. Small town vibe. Beautiful stadiums. Long standing traditions.

I don’t think they should matchup every year, but maybe a home and home every five years or so. Something that can be counted on.

feel free to post at Cal Golden Blogs if you want

to catch the latest. Oregon’s this week in Berkeley (should be raining) and U$C follows at the LA Coliseum.

Personally...

I would love to discontinue the rivalry w/ ND if for no other reason than variety. Martin is already on record saying that w/ the ND games scheduled well into the future that he is not looking to add another home/home w/ anyone else. I would prefer to follow in OSU’s steps (painful to say) and schedule 2 year series w/ a number of schools – Cal, Georgia, Texas, VT, ect. It is very depressing to think that the OOC for the next couple decades will be ND, MAC x 2, WAC/MW team.

do they have to play two MAC and a WAC/MW

team every year? I think I read Michigan-ND will be playing for 20 years or something like that.

I wouldn’t say ND is a premier BCS team…playing ND and another BCS school like Cal shouldn’t be too tough of a schedule, right? They’ve played Oregon before…I’m assuming they also played ND?

MAC schools

As a graduate of a MAC school I like that Michigan helps get some of them some extra exposure by (usually) beating them for a national audience. Honestly though, I would love to see Michigan play a PAC 10 or SEC team instead of two MAC schools a year. I would also love to see Michigan drop the ND game. I agree with Bo, ND needs the Big Ten more than we need them.

If it were a PAC 10 school I would like to see UCLA (but that is because I am in LA and have lots of friends with season tickets to the Rose Bowl) or a school that’s well respected nationally from another conference (like Oklahoma or Florida).

you are lost if you have UCLA season tickets…come north, good friend and enjoy all that is Berzerkeley.

I don't have

UCLA season tickets, but a lot of my friends graduated from there so I get to go to games with them occasionally. I almost drove up to see the MSU game this year just to be around some people from the state of Michigan. I personally would love to make the drive up there to see the Wolverines play you guys.

No, but

They don’t have to play MAC/WAC/MW teams, but Martin has made it clear that he is only interested in scheduling home games in addition to the ND series to guarantee the revenues. Most BCS schools do not have any interest in scheduling another BCS school w/out a return visit for that same reason. I think Martin would gladly accept a visit from Cal, but Tedford probably wouldn’t agree unless we promised a trip to the Bay Area.

Some of the bad BCS schools will decline a trip to one of the big boys in hopes of making a bowl. In 07 we tried to get Vandy as our opener. Their AD wanted an auto-win to try to get to a bowl, so he declined even though they would have made more money coming to AA than hosting Middle Tenn State. We ended up getting App St instead. Oh, if only Vandy would have accepted (sigh)…

Martin being the AD?

Correct

Sorry, I should have made that clear. I see where he is coming from. Playing more than 1 away OOC game is a major loss of revenue – important when trying to keep up w/ the Joneses. As a fan, though, it stinks that the only decent OOC game we will have for the next 20 yrs is ND. I would even accept it if ND rotated in every other series (ex. ND in 08 & 09, Cal in 10 & 11, ND in 12 & 13, Georgia in 14 &15, ND in …)

tmosnow and tbliggins...

thanks for posting! I understand Michigan has a lot of blogs and this SBN blog is attempting to emerge from the shadow of a more established blog. Best of luck!

Maize n Brew might like our DBD (Daily Bear Dump)

which is copied from Athleticsnation’s (AN; original SBN blog) DLD (Daily Link Dump).

I suppose yours would be DWD (Daily Wolverines Dump).

The general point is a one-stop-FanPost where bloggers can post all things Michigan-related. It works out well and lots of people comment and provide all types of relevant (and irrelevant) links. Here’s yesterday’s DBD (don’t ask about the dinosaur stuff…it is Berzerkeley for a reason).

I believe TedfordisGod posted on Cal Golden Blogs

about Michigan and Cal playing at a neutral site like LA’s Rose Bowl or Coliseum. Why, you ask? So a ton of recruits can get exposed to non-FUCLA and U$C teams. We would both prosper by taking a few recruits from SoCal.
