Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Sunday morning consolations and questions

Driving around aimlessly yesterday after the game, the only thing that made us feel better was that, preseason, we hoped for a split in these back-to-back road games, State and Iowa. That is still within this team's reach. Also winning two of the first three U-M-not-preseason-favorite games (ND, MSU, Iowa) was something to hope for. Also still possible.

But, unfortunately, that was about the only consolation. That and maybe Forcier is now over the hump. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but he seems to be adjusting during the plays now -- seen especially at the end of this game -- he's no longer just doing what he's been taught to do -- he's innovating. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, TP.

What happened to the O Line? Forcier was hurried all day. No running game -- did MSU shut that down or did we just not try? How bad can Khoury be? I mean, he's a 6'6" center. Hail! I'd like to see what Khoury's got, while Moosman goes back to doing what he does best.

On defense, what the hell was that? I know the philosophy this season has been "bend, don't break." It did sort of work in this game. But it's like Robinson (sorry, can't call him GERG right now, though I still don't know where that comes from) isn't willing to risk the big play, ever. This leads to Cousins running around like the next Vince Young.

In the OT, I think I take my time out before that MSU third-down play (what turned out to be the final play of the game).

Finally, after the jump, (NOOOOO......)

Star-divide

Don't run the punter! Fear the reaper! I wouldn't have had a problem with going for it there, using the offense. But do it to their face. That's the whole point. Don't hide behind a fake punt, especially running the punter in a situation where they are likely to be going for a block. This just seems like such an obvious 2+2=4 equation. I don't get it. [EDIT: Apparently, Mesko did that on his own. So now I do get it. Nice try, kid. Next time, listen to the coach.]

Oline

I think if Rocko was ready, he’d be in right now. The center exchange isn’t great, but let’s face it, Moosman is still a better lineman than Rocko is right now. I think the biggest thing is that State spent the last four games getting ready for this one and absolutely had to have this game.

And they still almost lost.

As for the defense, I dunno. tackling regressed this game and our linebacker play has been atrocious. I don’t think you’re gonna see much improvement out of that unit going forward. That’s just how it is.

still wandering aimlessly

As soon as the game was over, my immediate comments to my upset daughter were, “it’s ok! We are young and we didn’t quit. We will learn from this and get better!” I was feeling ok at the time, but as time slowly wore on, the questions started entering my niave brain. With our offensive line seemingly not able to block the ends which slowed the read option, why didn’t we run straight ahead? Call some quick hitters up the gut with Brown or Minor taking some heat off of Tate. States db’s were playing tight coverage at the line, why didn’t we call a one on one quick fly with Hemingway or a skinny post with Koger to loosen the lb’s? The first several drives by State, we gave up several 3rd and less than 10 yrds because our db’s are playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. State (as well as every other team) ran underneath routes for easy first downs which keeps our D on the field for large amounts of time. Why do we do that? I am all in for Michigan, always have and always will be! I support our coaches and every player who suites up in the Maize and Blue. I am happy with the improvement and the effort that this team is giving! What am I missing?
