Michigan AD Dave Brandon: Brady Hoke Hired as Michigan Football Coach

Press Release:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon announced today (Tuesday, Jan. 11) the hiring of Brady Hoke as the 19th coach in the 131-year history of Michigan football. Hoke arrives in Ann Arbor after spending the past eight seasons as a head coach at Ball State (2003-08) and San Diego State (2009-10).

"We are pleased to announce the hiring of Brady," said Brandon. "He is a terrific coach and will be a great ambassador and leader for our football program. We look forward to having him build a championship program on the field and in the classroom."

Hoke spent eight seasons in Ann Arbor before embarking on his head coaching career. He mentored the Wolverines defensive line all eight seasons, a group that helped Michigan rank annually among the nation's best in rushing and total defense. Hoke coached three linemen to All-America honors during his tenure -- William Carr (1996), Glen Steele (1997) and Rob Renes (1999) -- and had five players earn first-team All-Big Ten accolades.

A member of Michigan's staff during its 1997 national championship season, Hoke helped the defense lead the nation in rushing defense at 89 yards per game and 2.7 yards per carry. Michigan's team posted 5-3 records against Michigan State, Ohio State and in bowl games during Hoke's tenure on the staff.

Hoke was named the 2010 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Aztecs to a 9-4 overall record and 5-3 conference mark. He led SDSU to its first bowl game in 12 years, a 35-14 victory over Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl. Six of his players earned first-team All-MWC honors in 2010, including running back Ronnie Hamilton, the league's freshman of the year. In his first season at San Diego State, Hoke had five players named to All-MWC teams, while 11 players were MWC All-Academic selections.

Hoke took the leadership position at his alma mater, Ball State, in 2003 and built it into a championship program before departing after six seasons for the West Coast. He mentored players to 35 All-MAC selections in six years en route to a pair of bowl game appearances in 2007 and '08. The 2008 season marked the best season in program history, as the Cardinals tallied a school-record 12 wins and completed an undefeated Mid-American Conference regular season. His team won the West Division championship in 2008 and shared the division crown in 2007.

Hoke has 28 years of collegiate experience, with assistant coaching stints at Grand Valley State (1983), Western Michigan (1984-86), Toledo (1987-88), Oregon State (1989-94) and Michigan (1995-2002).

A 1982 graduate of Ball State University, Hoke earned four letters (1977-80) with the Cardinals. He was part of the only two teams in school history to post undefeated conference seasons: as a player in 1978 and as head coach in 2008. Hoke led BSU to the 1978 MAC championship, and as a team captain in 1980 earned All-MAC second team honors.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Hoke graduated from Fairmont East High School in 1977. Hoke and his wife, the former Laura Homberger, have one daughter, Kelly.

Brandon will formally introduce Hoke at a press conference Wednesday (Jan. 12) at 1 p.m. EST. The media opportunity will be held at the Junge Family Champions Center located between the Michigan Stadium and Crisler Arena tunnels. The press conference is not open to the public. Both Brandon and Hoke will be unavailable for media interviews until tomorrow's press conference.

Welcome aboard Brady. Analysis coming soon.

Like it or not, he's now our coach, so let's do our best to give him a fair shake

I’ll give you one post to wallow, then let’s find some cause for optimism and do our best to support him. If you need someone to direct your ire at, make it DB.

For every complex problem, there is an answer that is simple, easy to understand, and wrong.

NO GOD!!! NO!!!

Ok, I’m willing to give him a try, but my gut is telling me that we’re in for another long three years. It’s saying: “welcome to the next three years where Michigan will hit rock bottom.” No real name recognition, no real evidence or long track record of success; apparently, all you need in order to become head coach at Michigan nowadays is the “burning desire” to coach your former school. I wish him the best of luck, but I think we can say “goodbye” to our 2011 recruits, and possibly our 2012 ones as well. It sucks to be a Wolverine right now, and if he fails, Michigan will lose it’s “luster” as a premier program.

Dave Brandon=may God have mercy on your soul! :)

Welcome Brady Hoke

I’d be interested to know what issues couldn’t get worked out with Miles. I assume it’s money. Which if Brandon was being honest in the previous press conference shouldn’t have been an issue.

"There wasn't a man voting for it that didn't think that under a setup of this kind he'd muscle in on the profits of the men abler than himself...But while he was thinking that he'd get unearned benefits from the men above he forgot about the men below who'd get unearned benefits too. He forgot about all his inferiors that would rush to drain him just as he hoped to drain his superiors...That was our real motive when we voted. That was the truth of it. But we didn't like to think it. So the less we liked it the louder we yelled about our love for the common good."

by jrobb20 on Jan 11, 2011 3:23 PM CST reply actions

Maybe Brandon told him "you can't oversign players at Michigan".

And Miles responded “well, I’ve got meetings with 45 potential signees later today so I must be geauxing”.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

Okay

What are the postives? who has he been recruiting in the SoCal Area? Where do most of his player come from in SoCal?Are we keeping the 3-3-5? How are you going to use Denard? How do we sell Jeff Garland to 4 and 5 star football players?

Oh well

Best of luck to him. Here’s hoping he brings in great coordinators and gets every player of note to stay and can get some good recruits back off the fence.

I hope he does well, and so does Michigan, and not for just 1 or 2 years (a la Weis at ND his first two years before he fell off a cliff). I have my suspicions that won’t be the case, but I hope I’m wrong.

Hey, everyone thought the Chizik hire a few years ago was bad, right?

by robpollard on Jan 11, 2011 3:31 PM CST reply actions

I made the Chizik comparison someplace else and got accused of having an IQ slightly above my shoe size. Auburn fans met Chizik at the airport, before the official press conference, to jeer and boo. He seems to have made it work at Auburn.

Some would argue that Chizik’s greatest attribute was his willingness to work within the Auburn “system” of boosters.

by LandonC on Jan 11, 2011 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

Did some of those boosters help with church renovations?

by Primo Tat on Jan 11, 2011 3:45 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Or you mean

His greatest success was having the boosters pay Cam Newton to play there?

Probably along with a few other players we may never hear about.

by goblue14 on Jan 11, 2011 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

that is exactly what I mean…

I don’t think Chizik is a good example of what to expect when hiring a coach who has had a career losing record.

by LandonC on Jan 11, 2011 5:18 PM CST up reply actions

HOKE! Look, he may not be who you wanted, but deal with it. Dave Brandon did a terrible job with this. I have no problem that he chose Hoke. I have a problem that it was Hoke from the beginning and he just ran around all over pretending to give other people a chance to satisfy Michigan fans. You can’t justify Miles over Hoke. If he didn’t offer the job to anyone, then he needs to make that clear because by another coach or athletic director saying that they are happy where they are or they have kept their coach, it deteriorates the Michigan brand, something he said he wanted to build up. But no, Dave Brandon epitomizes what everyone hates about Michigan, arrogance. Arrogance with the media, arrogance with his own school’s fans, arrogance in every facet of the word. He said he was thinking long term about the hire, and I agree he should, but then why did you ever even fire Rich Rod? From a long term approach, it was worth another year with a new DC. Basically, he took a short term approach with Rich Rod and now a long term approach with the new coach. Whatever, I’m just venting.

We have a coach, now he has to recruit his ass off and build a staff littered with people who understand Michigan and are successful. As fans we have to support the hell out of the coaching staff and the players. Honestly, don’t be upset with the Hoke hire, if anything, be furious with David Brandon. The only acceptable apology would be to nullify the Adidas contract and bring Nike back.

by snoopblue on Jan 11, 2011 3:34 PM CST reply actions

Also, I hope he clarifies how he feels about the spread offense. I feel like one quote is getting read into waaaaaay too much. Can we start speculating on the staff now. Shoelace?

I like this hiring

Hoke has rebuilt both Ball State and SDSU. He’s hired great offensive assistants to take care of that side of the ball catre blanche while he takes care of the defense.

With the lack of depth up front, I can see a hybrid system in place. Don’t fret, Long’s defenses worked wonders at Oregon State with very little depth. But just because Hoke’s on board doesn’t mean Long will be, too.

How important is the whole “bring everyone together” thing? Do wins and losses really come with warm and fuzzy feelings from the alumni? Seems to be a little overstated to me.

"There wasn't a man voting for it that didn't think that under a setup of this kind he'd muscle in on the profits of the men abler than himself...But while he was thinking that he'd get unearned benefits from the men above he forgot about the men below who'd get unearned benefits too. I wonder if "warm and fuzzy" has been the problem...

or has Mary Sue, been the impediment, here? I mean, she has been the most – glaring – constant, in these negotiations, 2007 and 2011, respectively.

I think it’s more to do with two ADs who were CEOs in their prior lives. Having a CEO is great for the finances of an athletic department, but it doesn’t prepare you to do a search for your next football coach.

by LandonC on Jan 11, 2011 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

Hoke

Not crazy about this decision. It might have been a harder sell politically, but I think the team might have been better off in the long run with Gus Malzahn or Randy Shannon. Brandon rolled the dice here that he could get Harbaugh and I think he may have overestimated the attractiveness of the M job given the way Rodriguez was run out of town.

That said, I will support coach Hoke and I hope that the fans will learn some patience and some perspective.

by sacman701 on Jan 11, 2011 4:11 PM CST reply actions

Hoke is actually a pretty damn good coach.

For what he had to woirk with at SDSU, he did about as well as any great coach would have.

Time to wait

I had to calm down go take a pull of a bottle of highland park sit down and think for a few,and all I can say is I will wait and listen to what the man’s plan is, who are his OC/DC’s and position coaches, and hopefully this can work. I’ll say this Db sure has pinned a lot on a guy that does not look qualified, and thats not a risk I thought a big time CEO would take. I am not impressed.

by GabbyGoBlue on Jan 11, 2011 4:32 PM CST reply actions

This can work!

Whether it does work remains to be seen, but I like bringing in a guy that understands defense. Yes, he ran the 3-3-5 at SDSU, but he worked with successful variations of it when he was a position coach in the Pac Ten. He isn’t Bo. But nobody could be Bo. I’m just hoping he isn’t a Carr.

by Primo Tat on Jan 11, 2011 4:39 PM CST reply actions

Patterson was the only coach I really was hoping for. Hoke did a hell of a job at SDSU vs TCU and other top 25 teams last year.

I am optimistic about Hoke!

by Pinchy The Lobster on Jan 11, 2011 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Brady Hoke was a DL coach at Michigan for 8 years, I’m sure he knows what defense would be successful in the Big Ten. People are getting waay to worried about another 3-3-5. And who knows, maybe Hoke actually knows how to run the 3-3-5 properly. If you watched the Rose Bowl, TCU ran it pretty well against Wisco.

by snoopblue on Jan 11, 2011 4:41 PM CST reply actions

Hoke's mentor...

Rocky Long is to the 3-3-5 what Mouse Davis is to the Run and Shoot. He hired Long to coordinate SDSU’s defense. That tells me he knows what schemes to use that will be best utilized by his players, and what coaches to hire to implement it and coach it to the kids they have on roster.

by Primo Tat on Jan 11, 2011 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

TCU plays a 4-2-5 defense

which is a HUGE difference from 3-3-5
the 4-2-5 always has 6 guys on the line rushing, dropping, covering ,thus no running lanes and the QB has to be quick in his reads.
the 3-3-5 :95 % of the time only rushes 2-3 guys and the rest drop into zones or areas. This leaves GAPING run lanes and gives the QB all day.

This is a process

Lets let it play out before jumping off the cliff… Who will his OC and DC be? Or his scheme? That doesn’t interest me… BTW. I’m expecting Rockey Long, his DC and former New Mexico HC and Oregon State DC, to stay on as the SDSU HC. How does he do at holding on to the current players, and how does he do at pullign together a recruiting class. My first indication of problems with RichRod was when Mallet, Manningham, and Arrington left almost immediately. One thing Hoke has shown is a willing to adjust his scheme based on the players… What a concept a coach who doesn’t believe in magic scheme, but teaching players the fundamentals and then putting them in position to succeed.

by cokolman on Jan 11, 2011 4:45 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Long was rumored to be in the running for the Texas State gig before Franchione nabbed it. Not sure what direction SDSU would go in. Long was pushed out of Albuquerque in favor of the glitz and glam recruiting prowess of Mike Locksley only to direct his former protege’s defense at SDSU. Makes sense for him to stick around and remain a thorn in his alma’s side.

by Primo Tat on Jan 11, 2011 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

By the way, in case no one noticed..
Sept. 24, 2011 – San Diego State comes into Michigan Stadium to play against Wolverines and their former coach. I am sure Hoke’s former players, especially Ronnie Hillman, would like show him what he left at SDSU. Just what we need, a team coming into Michigan Stadium with something to prove. Oh god.

by snoopblue on Jan 11, 2011 4:46 PM CST reply actions

FWIW: SDSU losses this year
1. Utah 38 SDSU 34 2. TCU 40 SDSU 35 3. BYU 24 SDSU 21 4. Missouri 27 SDSU 24. Other than BYU, the other losses are against very good teams. Scoring 35 agaist TCU with that D is huge. Michigans losses to good teams were all drubbings. As a lifelong fan and season ticket holder I am in for Hoke. Hope it works out or we could have the decade plus disaster ND had with bad hires. Go blue!

Isnt he a disicple of Carr? I hope he can turn it all around. I think my anger is more towards DB.I think most people thought the guy coming in would be someone we could trust and believe in to get us back on track, someone who whould inspire the fan base right off the bat,not a guy who we have to track down fluff pieces from Jason Whitlock just to stop our hands from shaking. Shut it about 3-3-5

Hoke’s UM D-line is was the most dominant in my remember-able history. We’ll all just have to take a deep breath and see what coaches he’ll bring/if RRod’s people all want to jump ship. Will Calvin McGee stay a year or two to keep Shoelace and the spread humming? The Hoke can say WTF this is how defense is played? Who knows, not me, not the MSM so I’ll shut it until I hear something and think positively because 198-3 against the lesser known MSU feels like rock bottom.

I think Hoke is a guy that doesn’t give a flying jack about what system is ran so until we see/hear something in the fall we can stfu. He wants to put forth the best squad he can. While he doesn’t have the credentials I think there is more upside. I also would have to think that Hoke knows the UM players somewhat and has been paying attention unlike RR who didn’t even know what state Ann Arbor was in.

How many years would Les want to coach here before retiring? We may have set ourselves up for yet another search.

I said a week or two ago it would be Hoke because of the hostile environment. We wanted the best(12-1 guys) or previous Michigan coaches and it left us with a short list. Not many people wanted to leave the limelight after the normal coaching change period and move into a place where they’ll be tarred and feathered as soon as they get off the A2 Saline Road/State Street exit.

yup and this could really mean denard is outta here. sigh. i guess the one silver-lining is that hoke did run a sort of pro-style/spread hybrid at SDSU. whether that’s enough to convince denard, im not really sure.

it wouldnt shock me if he ends up transferring to VT, Auburn, or back to his native Florida. sigh.

i guess not all is lost with gardner waiting in the wings. and tate might even stick around since i think he could be more suited for hoke’s style.

but damn Brandon. you want to hire a coach with the potential to drive away the best offensive player in the big 10. ugh.

Denard is here for his education

That and playing QB is why he came to Michigan,im sure Hoke will work his offense around one the best runners and a pretty good thrower (Denard) plus Michigan has its top 5 WRs coming back.
Hoke needs to work 100% on the defense, the offense will be fine.

Not my first choice

and the W-L resume of Brady Hoke is suspect to me.

The Michigan (Detroit) Press is really playing up the 12-1 at Ball State (year 6 after cratering it for the first 4) and the 9-4 at SDSU (year 2), and of course his stint as a DL coach (position coach, not coordinator) at Michigan.

The positives about Hoke are recruiting the Midwest and especially California. Borges can also recruit the West with the best of them, which should be good for Michigan. The other is balance. Hoke’s teams at Ball State and SD State both had balanced attacks with good, lead RBs and a respectable passing attack.

Although Hoke has made disparaging remarks about the “Spread offense” and “Basketball on grass”, he doesn’t aspire to be as predictable as Mike Debord either. He has adjusted things to suit the talent at his disposal. Like allowing QB Nate Davis to run the ball for 540 yards and 10 TDs his junior and senior seasons.

Go Blue!
