OSU AD Gene Smith: "Uhhhh ummmm....."
So for those that missed it, Gene Smith came on to the CBS post-game grinning ear to ear following his team's victory this afternoon over Michigan, but it didn't last long. For those that are not aware, Smith is not only the AD of Ohio State, but the chair of the selection committee for the tournament (stunner eh?). He showed up to be interviewed on the process... NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND!
CBS's Seth Davis and crew started the questioning off about none other than JIM TRESSEL! Stock footage and all. Smith not only was caught totally off-guard, but his visual response to the questioning of the penalty and why they didn't AT LEAST suspend him for two conference games was worth every penny. The smile and blood ran away from his face and all he could manage was "Uhhhhhhhhhhh um, we have uh, an ongoing investigation....." Two solid questions about Tressel, on basketball coverage no less, and the AD of the school has no response... it's only the beginning Buckeye fans.

Sooo Sorry I Missed It!!
I had a whole lot of respect for coach T before this broke. But the more I read and hear, the more I wonder if that respect wasn’t misplaced. I know it has been replaced by a whole bunch of contempt. There is an article in the Harrisburg Patriot-News written by a OSU alum named David Jones. There is a link at AnnArbor.com. I liked it, but maybe I’m looking for more things damning T than supporting him. I take two things from the Jones article that may make thing like this from bothering me so much in the future. First, hold only those you know as heroes. Secondly, there is a lot of truth to the "where there’s smoke, there’s likely fire.
Ohio State (O-Lie-O State to many bloggers these days) is really looking bad through all this. President Gee’s attempt at humor saying he hopes the coach doesn’t dismiss him is in very poor taste considering what is going on here. I don’t think that selling memorbilia for cash or tattoos is a real big deal. I think if T had been proactive on this he may avoided a 5 games suspention for his players. They might have been given 2 games last fall. I think not “finding it” until December irked the NCAA and because they played all fall, 5 games were meted out. And that was when it was believed OSU knew nothing about it. If I’m the NCAA, I think I would revisit the suspentions of the players. Knowing that the school knew—namely Coach T—about the violations before the season started, makes this a whole new case. And to leave the players punishment as is, rewards the university—again, namely Coach T—for lying. I would seriously consider a whole season suspension, the coach also.
This incident has me wondering strongly about previous violations at OSU. I wonder how many emails and phone calls T has received over the years that haven’t seen the light of day and would certainly show a lack of institutional control. One thing I heard during, actually after, the Michigan investigation was how much the NCAA appreciated the openness and frankness of everyone from the president, to RR through the whole staff. I bet you don’t hear that from the NCAA about OSU.

“This incident has me wondering strongly about previous violations at OSU. I wonder how many emails and phone calls T has received over the years that haven’t seen the light of day and would certainly show a lack of institutional control.”
I wonder how this would be applied to other major college coaches. All of them would have the same “lack of institutional control” if we knew all truths.
“One thing I heard during, actually after, the Michigan investigation was how much the NCAA appreciated the openness and frankness of everyone from the president, to RR through the whole staff. I bet you don’t hear that from the NCAA about OSU.”
Ohio State opened this investigation in January and alerted the NCAA then so they could assist them? One thing people don’t get about this is that OSU has been with the NCAA since the beginning of Tressel-gate, which again was in January. Yahoo! has people believing that they caused an investigation. Yahoo! did almost absolutely nothing from an investigation stand point.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
Except to expose the fact
That the head coach of the football team was aware of the impropriety committed by his players, aware of the fact that said actions made them ineligible and…. and oh he did nothing about it. Well that’s not entirely true, he continued to play them all the way to a Big Ten title and a BCS bowl. No biggie. Nothing to see here.
Going to the rack early with the “everybody does it approach” eh? Michigan just went through an investigation that makes what OSU has gone through so far look like a complete joke and stunningly the U of M was found to have no institutional control issues of any sort, in fact, nothing even remotely approaching what OSU has on record was found, so you can say that till you’re Blue in the face, it won’t make a bit of difference to your program when the whip comes down.
GO BLUE! http://www.maizenbrew.com/
Oh...
and then he lied about it, formally. Again, nothing to be seen there, every coach lies about covering up rules violations.
GO BLUE! http://www.maizenbrew.com/
You are one naive little man if
you don’t think A LOT of major college coaches sign a “I haven’t seen a violation” slip when they’ve seen a violation or multiple.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
irrelevant
The point is not that other coaches do it, but that Jim Tressel was caught red-handed and that there is no plausible deniability on his part. It didn’t matter in the Michigan Practice-gate that other schools are likely to do this, and it doesn’t matter here, either. You’re just deflecting at this point.
The whole first part of the comment was full of fail.
I suggest you read this: http://www.alongtheolentangy.com/2011/3/8/2038958/timeline-of-ohio-states-official-report-and-investigation-of#storyjump
Ohio State began an investigation on the matter in mid-January and informed the NCAA shortly after. The NCAA and Ohio State have been working together on this for a long while now. Ohio State has concealed nothing from the NCAA.
I remember vividly when Jim Tressel defended UM and Rich-Rod at the beginning of their scrutiny. I didn’t expect UM fans to defend Ohio State or Jim Tressel(just like Ohio State fans wouldn’t defend UM), but I certainly understand and respect the one that is through all of this. Oh, and not to mention your coach Hoke coming out in defense towards Jim Tressel. I’m sure that makes you feel good inside.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
So repeatedly lying,
covering up, and submitting fraudulent documents = concealing nothing from the NCAA. “I lied about it, before I told the truth!”
Stupid Llamas!.

I guess I'm dealing with really ignorant people here.
Ohio State never covered up anything and never submitted fraudulent documents. When Ohio State found out of about a potential violation committed by Jim Tressel in mid-January, they began an investigation and alerted the NCAA immediately. Please know the situation before commenting.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
Jim Tressel
is a part of Ohio State. Jim Tressel lied, covered up, and submitted fraudulent documents. I appreciate that this probably hurts you, and everybody joking and talking trash about Ohio State sucks, but it is justified.
Stupid Llamas!.

You sir,
are an idiot.
That is your response? You are made a fool of for not knowing the details of the situation and your response is that he “is a part of Ohio State.”
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
I know all the details.
A university is represented by its employees. To claim that Ohio State did no wrong when its highest profile employee did is an exercise in cognitive dissonance. Also ad hominem attacks are always a sign of a superior argument.

I'm losing brain cells talking to you.
I hope Wolverine fans do not revere you.
Jim Tressel committed an NCAA violation. Ohio State, the institution or the athletic department committed no violation. Look at the self report.
http://www.dispatch.com/wwwexportcontent/sites/dispatch/sports/stories/2011/03/09/SelfReport.pdf
Why do you think Jim Tressel is listed as the transgressor. When you say “Ohio State lied to the NCAA” as opposed to “Jim Tressel lied to the NCAA” that changes literally almost everything.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"

Excellent
So there is no possibility of any punishment for Ohio State University, since they did nothing wrong. I am sure Tennessee fans will be thrilled to learn that the university has nothing to worry about since Bruce Pearl and not Tennessee broke rules.

The football program has already been punished
and will likely be further punished by the NCAA. Because the head of the Ohio State football program committed a major violation.
Ohio State committed no violation though. How you stand by that is beyond me.

Fine if that is how you see it
Not being snarky but serious, who has to commit a violation before it is correct to say “The University committed a violation?”

Jake, stop and think.
I get the idea that you are drawing a line between T and OSU. But it is really hard to do that in this case. And Otis is right, it is the university, then ultimately the player (all of them unfortunately) who will pay the price. So don’t let semantics get in the way of your argument.
Understand that as this goes along, the brick and mortar isn’t the university. It’s the coach, the AD, the President, the players, and of course, the students and faculty, among others ARE the University. All these people represent OSU in some way. As far as the football program goes, that’s Coach T’s area, he represents the whole thing. Any deception on his part represents the football program. If we say "OSU lied or deceived. . . ", it is saying the football program lied because he is the head guy there. We are talking about the OSU Football program. Not the whole university. We aren’t saying the Biology Department or the Sociology Department lied. Or anyone else there. Not the Basketball program or the Baseball program.
BTW, 12=twelve

This ^
The only reason I commented was to mock/understand this strange logic. I hope the NCAA punishes OSU in an appropriate manner, but beyond that my only interest in this case is that it is interesting.

I hear you
Sometimes people don’t want to hear that their sacred school may have done something wrong, made a mistake, or was deceptive and now isn’t looking so good. I hardly watched college football for a good part fo the last 3 season because I didn’t what to hear how poorly Michigan was doing. But i wouldn’t be hanging out at a college site, especially at a rivals. But that’s just me.

I looked through his recent comments
this is who he is. I hate hearing crap about Alabama, but I don’t go around posting absurd arguments about things they actually did. Really I just hate illogical arguments. And if your school gets busted, suck it up and handle it.

Gene Smith
was on that show to speak strictly about the NCAA Tournament selection process. To expect him to answer those questions at a time like that is ridiculous. The first question, I was fine with. Ya know, get it out of the way and let Smith give no comment. But that foul little smirk Seth Davis had on asking the second question even after Smith said he would have no comment… The second question was inappropriate, and so was the first if Smith was told the talk would be about the NCAA Tournament.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
It's not like he's the Athletic Director of one of the biggest athletic departments in the country that happens to be under extreme scrutiny thanks to the actions of it's highest profile employee...
No nothing like that…
Everyone needs to submit their questions at LEAST 3 days before hand on issues concerning Jim Tressel.
Dude, you’re hilarious, please continue in tremendous detail.
GO BLUE! http://www.maizenbrew.com/
I said
the first one was fine. Let him say he’ll have no comment, then move on. To continue on though, and to expect him to say anything on the matter is ridiculous.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"

Also,
something I found hilarious. I know everyone remembers the griping of the tat-five not being suspended immediately, now everybody wants a delayed suspension?
People will always complain.
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
Feeling Stressed, People got you down, Jake?
Dial 1-800-Wwaaahh.
See, Jake, what I am saying above is that had T been up front and open the way he was supposed to be, you know, according to his contract, who knows what would have happened, but he did not do what he was supposed to. The suspensions were based on the university just finding out about the “issue” in December. Guess what, Jake, the university—namely Coach T—knew about it five months before the season started. Now that the NCAA knows they were lied to about when the “university” was made aware of the issues, so now it’s hammer time. At least it should be. And the more Buckeye Bloods like you try to defend T, or OSU’s handling of this, the more ridiculous you and OSU look in the eyes of people who still have a grasp of reality.
And if you aren’t trying to defend OSU by trashing those who talk about the issues, you are dismissing the transgressions as either unimportant or giving the universal “everybody does it” line. Then to top it off, you take cheap shots at the fans of the team you just beat. And people say Michigan fans are arrogant.
And it is even more arrogant to expect TV people not to try to ask questions about the huge event that took place this week. If Smith was surprised to get Tressel questions, he’s showing more arrogance. Do you and he think that after hastily calling a presser, revealing the deception, offering up one of the lamest excuses since “the dog ate my homework” (From David Jones, OSU alum), and dismissing the whole thing as a minor glitch, that he isn’t going to get those questions? When does this get real for you. Smitty looks very bad for his part in all this and he’s gonna take heat. He went to bat for the football team in December, and brought the Big 10 commissioner in on it, and then finds that Tressel made a fool of him AND the Big 10 commissioner. He was lied to by T, (deception by omission is still deception). And then defend Tressel to the nth degree. And that isn’t going to get attention from the press? The press isn’t going to let up until this is very old and ugly. Get used to it.

I respect both of your posts.
However, to the other guy I’m talking to who is telling me that Ohio State lied to the NCAA and that Tressel = Ohio State… I just can’t respect those kind of posts.

You just don't get it do you?
It’s not about delaying or not delaying Tressels slap on the wrist. It’s about OSU telling him to sit out two of their easiest games of the season as opposed to games that actually matter. It’s like if you kill somebody and they send you to summer camp instead of jail.
By the way
was this really a front page post? Seems more “Fan Post” or “Fan Shot” to me.
Maybe you are just trying to take the eyes away from the Wolverines defeat to the Buckeyes earlier today ;)
Doug: "Why don't you tell him that your total salary last year was tweleve dollars?!?"
Arthur: "That was after taxes!!!"
Really.
The fact that you were even here showed that you were here just to kick us while we were down anyways. When you saw the insulting post you got a stinky look on your face and just had to argue against the opinion of 99% of the sane population.
Enjoy your bullshit, referee induced win. Note well that I’ll be predicting OSU to fall flat on its face in the tourney akin to KU last year, because B1G refs don’t travel to the NCAAs to protect their darling Sullinger and OSU doesn’t get to escape by 5 points to B1G teams in the NCAAs- they actually have to match up against the Big East and, if they get that far, UNC and Duke.
SnipeShot...
You’ve had some good comments on this site and I’m generally always up to defend a fellow Wolverine, but OSU was the superior team last night, led by 15+ points at one point, and played a monster game defensively… sure, the refs made a few questionable calls, but you’ve gotta give credit to the Buckeyes for a win that they gutted out due to their experience and senior leadership
Go Maize, Blue, and Gray!
Yeah you're right
I was just a little frustrated with some Buckeye trash coming to the board and trolling it up. I got it, they were the better team, but I was just really frustrated.
didn't mean to play the part of the moderator
but i mean, most of what that guy said spoke for itself, eh?
Go Maize, Blue, and Gray!
that said
I’m thoroughly looking forward to OSU falling on its face, if that indeed does happen
Go Maize, Blue, and Gray!
Best part about this whole thing for me as an Iowa fan
that everyone has completely forgotten about Ferentz and the Rhybdo case. yeah, they are hard to compare because Ferentz didnt really break any rules (the weight training coach may have, we will have to see), but still….yay!
does the at least our coach didn’t lie to the NCAA and hide that the players were selling goods for tats for 8 months dance
