Getting To Know You: Nebraska's Bo Pelini - A Less Than Critical Look at the Big Ten's Football Coaches

Bo Pelini
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Fourth Year
Record:
29-12
Last Year: 10-4

In a word full of vanilla head coaches, I'm so happy we have Bo Pelini. Well... let me rephrase that. I'm so happy that someone else has Bo Pelini. And that I get to watch. (warning: bad soundtrack below)

Pelini voyeurism is a fairly popular hobby around college football, what with his insane side line rants, ornery personality and freezer full of severed heads belonging to people who have crossed him. I mean there are shoddily made pipe bombs with longer fuses than Pelini. If there is a single coach in college football who is a bad call away from recreating the Wood Hayes What-The-Fuck-Just-Happened Punch of an opposing player, it's Pelini. A well timed insult during a blowout loss could send the guy on a twelve state killing spree, so you just have towatch him to see what happens next. (As an aside, sadly, Clemson is not on Nebraska's schedule any time soon. But in order to set up the possibility of Pelini actually mimicking Hayes, the Big Ten has to make Clemson Nebraksa's new out of state rival. Please. Think of the children.)

All the temper tantrum attention aside, it's really too bad. That's because Pelini appears to be one hell of a coach and recruiter. Since he took over, Nebraska seems to have reclaimed its spot as one of the top destinations for talent in the country and is year-in, year-out a legitimate top 10 program. In Pelini's three years at Nebraska the Huskers have been in the Big XII Championship game twice and garnered top ten rankings at some point during the season. Sadly, in both championship appearances the Huskers have managed to cough up leads and lose in heart breaking fashion. The result: a couple of fine Pelini meltdowns (though the crown jewel of meltdowns was against Texas A&M, and ooooh boy was it grand). It goes full circle.

Pelini reminds me a little bit of Rich Rodriguez, except to the extent that he recognizes there is a thing called defense. He loves grinding his quarterbacks into a fine powder, wearing down his team by midseason, and the soulful strains of Josh Groban (I'm just assuming). But he's definitely his own man. Anyone that can recruit and retain a player whose name means "House of Spears" definitely has a screw or two loose. By virtue of his inclusion in the conference Pelini is automatically the most batshit crazy coach the Big Ten boasts. And with the Dread Pirate Leach's prolonged imprisonment in Trinidad under order of the French Crown, he may well be the craziest coach in the BCS. And he's all ours... er... Nebraska's. (Thank God)

I am happy we have him...

The biggest reason…he cares. He holds those accountable for their play and actions, as well as takes responsibility. He brings passion and fire to us, both the team and the fans. After having Callahan, a man who personally destroyed our history in his first year, and then proceeded to remove 250 yrs worth of Nebraska coaching experience, Pelini is a welcome site. He cares about the players, and our tradition. The players love him because of this. He constantly pushes them to make them better. I felt for you guys when you had Rich Rod. He was your version of Callahan, and no program of either of our statures, deserves that. Same deal…he forgot about defense…
I hope your new coach does well, and pushes your players to their depths. I hope he brings back a defense to Michigan, and can bring them back to a prominent team. I felt for you guys during the last few years as you suffered, just as we suffered, just as Alabama and Tennessee have suffered. The long time programs need to take back over, and I would be happy to see it with Michigan.
Again, I love Pelini and what he has brought us. He had to deal with a selfish Martinez in the A&M game, a kid that was in the locker room texting his dad and complaining about how shitty his line was…calling out his teamates behind their backs, and then threatening Pelini with leaving the program. Pelini put him in his place, and informed him that He alone is the Alpha on the team. Now, Martinez has supposedly had a rebirth, and has since been humbled by the experience. I for one, am glad that Pelini didn’t let him walk all over the team and cause more discourse. Yeah, he is out of control, but would you rather see that passion after a loss, or Rich Rod’s subtle “yeeeaaahhh, we didn’t do to well….we should probably do better next time…” That is what the whole world saw from him. Someone that didn’t care about his Team, or Michigan. He didn’t show passion…just sayin’ from an outside view…
Well, Welcome back Michigan. Thanks for letting us in your conference. I can speak for all Huskers that we are proud to be here, and even more proud to play along side of you. Here is to some hella games in the future, and to my first trip to the Big House. I can’t wait! Good luck this year.

Amen

We’re thrilled to have you guys. I love stuff like this, especially with Husker fans. You guys have great senses of humor to go along with a great passion for the game. It’s going to be a hell of a year. Can’t wait to play you in November.

More about Pelini

Pelini is actually cool man. Raises money for great causes, (cancer and diabetes researcn) not anger mangement services by the way. And overall has a good sense of humor. Unfortunately what everyone saw was the Texas a@m game where the penality count was NU 16 to the aggie 4. Somethign was not right and everyone knew it. But its over, this is a Big 10 blog. So hopefully welcome back Michigan and may our games play out like the steelers and Ravens. I have a feeling they might.

The Real Bo Pelini

This post may be what the outside view is of Pelini but that view is not accurate. Yes he gets intense but you have to look at the situation he was put in last year. If you watched a couple of games it was clear to see that the fix was in. I wil say, though that the officiating was far improved during the Big 12 championship game. As a student of UNL, I have seen the relationship he has built with the community and it obvious to see there is more to the man than an raging coach. And bottom line is HIS players love himand have his back. Shame that this is the public view

He did have to re-recruit Suh

As Suh had been considering going pro after his sophomore season.
