Let's just get to the part where you all incredulously ask me Notre Dame number one?
Yes.
I mean, the Irish are undefeated, beat Stanford, Oklahoma, Michigan, and haven't tripped up like almost everyone else. I don't like it much either, but the Irish have done everything necessary to take the number one spot by default. Unless USC can finally put together a full game on both sides of the ball, I have a bad feeling that the Return To Glory (TM) is nearly complete.
Oh, you have another incredulous question?
Ohio State at number three? You can't be serious.
Yes, in fact I am. The Buckeyes are still undefeated and while the schedule hasn't been the hardest, something has to be said for simply making it through. I mean, look at last night. Oregon played a game where it didn't break 20 points despite playing an overtime period. Kansas State was held to 24 points by Baylor's defense. Last week Alabama let Texas A&M jump out to a 20-0 lead.
College football is a cruel mistress. Ty Duffy said it best in this morning's reaction post on TBL:
"Great teams win games they control. National title teams, through fortune or timely execution, find a way to win the one or two games they can't."
Ohio State has continually found ways to win despite inconsistency. Despite letting Wisconsin score to tie the game late, the Buckeyes went into overtime and took control of the game. One more game and the Buckeyes can claim a perfect record and spend the next decade getting righteously indignant that the NCAA deprived them of a chance at a national championship.
Besides, we could all vote OSU number one and it wouldn't matter anyway.
Go Blue, beat the Bucks!
