There Are 80 Days to Michigan Football

Gregory Shamus

Waiting for the opening Saturday of college football is agonizing. All we want is 13 weeks of Brent Musberger "pardner" one-liners, the buzz of Michigan Stadium in late November, and jokes about the Bowl Championship Series. Fear not, bleary-eyed traveler. This is a continuing series intended to get through the long, hot summer and back to the glory of football season.

Michigan fans may not recall, but before Braylon Edwards was a known human to us, he wore the number 80 jersey. It was the second coming of Anthony Carter to most when he was given the number one jersey, but he had to establish himself as a legend first. Then Michigan State came to Ann Arbor in 2004. Edwards is at or near the top of the Michigan statistics records in every receiving category for his career. The most astonishing being the record for most career 100-yard receiving games. In that game against Michigan State he didn't require any further validation that he was not only the next Anthony Carter but the very reason receivers are given the number one jersey at Michigan. Edwards also won the Biletnikoff Award for that 2004 season to solidify himself as the best in all the land.
