Michigan 74 - Northwestern 51

Marilyn Indahl-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan starts slow but pours it on in the second half to move to 2-0 in the Big Ten.

The Wolverines started another game flat, this time going into the first TV timeout down 7-4.  It was not a positive beginning to the game as the Wolverines were bitten early by the turnover bug.  Michigan kept chugging on the offensive side of the court and after another seven minutes of gametime the Wolverines opened up a five point lead.  Ultimately it was that kind of first half for Michigan, where the Wolverines would slowly push the lead and Northwestern's Drew Crawford would keep dragging Northwestern back into it.  By halftime Michigan had a seven point lead that probably should have been more.

That rush would come after halftime as Michigan used the second half to blow the game wide open.  Michigan outscored Northwestern 20-11 over the first 11 minutes of the second, and that was all she wrote.

The MIchigan offense is still shaky at times.  Caris LeVert has yet to build on his strong non-conference showing, but with the steady improvement of Glenn Robinson III (who was healthy for this game) and Nik Stauskas' continued offensive showcase, MIchigan is finding enough offense to sustain itself.

The Jordan Morgan/Jon Horford duo once again put together a nice game in Mitch McGary's absence.  Morgan started and notched eight points on a perfect 3/3 from the field with two free throws while Horford added seven points.  Both nabbed eight rebounds a piece as Michigan won the rebounding margin.

Northwestern isn't a marquee Big Ten opponent, but it is a positive sign to see the Wolverines shake off a slow start and put together a solid and drama-free 20 point victory.  Michigan now has ten wins on the year and is 2-0 in the conference.  The Wolverines will travel to Lincoln on Thursday to take on Nebraska.
