Nik Stauskas sat this game out due to a bum ankle. His presence was not missed as Michigan outscored the Coppin State Eagles by 19 in the first half and cruised to a final score that narrowly missed doubling up the Eagles final total. True to form, Coppin State shot the ball poorly, hitting 34% of its shots and just two of 17 from outside.
For Michigan, the unlikely leader was true freshman Zak Irvin, who finished with a game high 24 points. He had ten in the first half and was 6/10 from outside on the day while adding five rebounds and three assists. Irvin has been quiet thus far in the season, often playing in the shadow of Michigan's three talented second year wings, but the youngster has a lot of talent and a game like this is a good sign that he could develop into an impact rotation player down the line.
Caris LeVert and Glenn Robinson III also scored in double figures, with 15 and 14 points respectively. LeVert missed all three of his outside shots, but was 5/5 from the line.
Derrick Walton once again had some trouble scoring, going 1/4 from outside and 3/8 overall, but he added five rebounds and seven assists to just two turnovers. Michigan has enough offensive firepower that Walton won't be relied upon heavily as anything more than a facilitator and outside shooter.
Ultimately there isn't too much to learn from this one. Michigan was expected to win big and did.
Next week's game against Duke will be considerably tougher.
