There Are 98 Days to Michigan Football

Waiting for the opening Saturday of college football is agonizing. All we want is 13 weeks of Brent Musberger "pardner" one-liners, the buzz of Michigan Stadium in late November, and jokes about the Bowl Championship Series. Fear not, bleary-eyed traveler. This is a continuing series intended to get through the long, hot summer and back to the glory of football season.

37 years ago, Michigan was on top of the college football rankings after the first week of the season courtesy of a thrashing of Wisconsin 40-27. They justified that new ranking the following week by putting up 51 on Stanford in a shutout.

Rick Leach was the star but Rob Lytle put up the best single-season rushing performance in program history. At season's end, Michigan had allowed 95 points to be scored against them. And still finished in a tie for the conference title.
