Football Season Begins in 118 Days

Waiting for the opening Saturday of college football is agonizing. All we want is 13 weeks of Brent Musberger "pardner" one-liners, the buzz of Michigan Stadium in late November, and jokes about the Bowl Championship Series. Fear not, bleary-eyed traveler. This designates the first installment in what will become a recurring series, designed to get you, the reader, to August 31st.

118 days stand between us and seeing team 134 storm out of the tunnel, touch the banner and begin a new season of Michigan football.

Sixteen years ago, team 118 ascended to the top of the college football world and won a national title in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl.

That game is still a blur to me after all this time. The two things that aren't are Charles Woodson's interception in the endzone I happened to be sitting in, and a panicked Mike Price waving his arms in the air wildly, claiming there was still time on the clock.

Team 118 didn't have NFL-caliber talent at every position, but they had Brian Greise and Woodson, Glen Steele and Tai Streets.

118 days until all is right in the world, and we sing "The Victors" loud and often.
