There Are 63 Days to Michigan Football

Waiting for the opening Saturday of college football is agonizing. All we want is 13 weeks of Brent Musberger "pardner" one-liners, the buzz of Michigan Stadium in late November, and jokes about the Bowl Championship Series. Fear not, bleary-eyed traveler. This is a continuing series intended to get through the long, hot summer and back to the glory of football season.

Michigan was bad in the 1960's before Bo Schembechler showed up. As mentioned, they went seven years in a row with a horrid conference finish before the 1965 Rose Bowl victory. Somehow, the 1963 team made one of its three wins against second ranked Illinois -- at Illinois. I suppose I can liken it to the 2008 team miraculously beating a much better Wisconsin team after a 4th quarter comeback, but the '63 team certainly didn't have players the caliber of Tate Forcier or Terrence Taylor. But Illinois had Dick Butkus and still managed to lose. Sports are weird.
