There Are 88 Days to Michigan Football

Waiting for the opening Saturday of college football is agonizing. All we want is 13 weeks of Brent Musberger "pardner" one-liners, the buzz of Michigan Stadium in late November, and jokes about the Bowl Championship Series. Fear not, bleary-eyed traveler. This is a continuing series intended to get through the long, hot summer and back to the glory of football season.

Before Tyrone Wheatley and the A-Train, Michigan had Leroy Hoard. He was part of the 1988 team that won a Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl against USC. A fullback by trade but with the feet of a ballerina, Hoard is still in the Michigan record books for career average rushing yards per carry (5.43) and average yards per rush in a single game (18.28).

The '88 team spoiled John Cooper's debut as Ohio State's head coach with a comeback victory to go to the Rose Bowl. As Keith Jackson said of Hoard, "Don't arm tackle him!"
