Michigan did what it needed to do in week one: it won games that it shouldn't lose.

For now that is enough to keep the Wolverines sitting at the back end of the AP poll at 24.  Michigan will have a game against Detroit on Thursday before finally getting a major conference opponent — albeit one that is dealing with a lot of roster turnover from a year ago — in the Oregon Ducks, followed by a game against either VCU or Villanova.  Oregon won't move the needle, but the other two are 15th and 12th respectively, giving a young Michigan team an early opportunity to make a move up the polls.

Other rankings of note:  Michigan's other big non-conference opponents are Arizona (2), SMU (22), and Syracuse (23).  Big Ten teams currently ranked ahead of Michigan:  Wisconsin (3), MSU (19), OSU (20), and Nebraska (21).
