The cries for change of quarterback have been heard far and wide from the Michigan faithful. Whether those calls are answered still remain to be seen.
Senior quarterback Devin Gardner, who is entering his second full season as the starting quarterback at Michigan (2-1), has received a good portion -- alongside the offensive line -- of the fan vitriol throughout the team's struggles of last season.
Although a strong start against Appalachian State gave the appearance he is turning things around from the fan perspective, committing five turnovers -- four of those interceptions -- in the last two games have placed him firmly under the microscope.
The cries for change are growing louder from the fan base.
For now, the Michigan coaching staff want nothing to do with a quarterback change, Gardner is their man. The Shane Morris era of Michigan football will have to wait just a little bit longer.
"The backup quarterback is always the most popular guy in town," offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier said. "Shane has done a tremendous job. I said leading up to the Notre Dame game he had an exceptional week of practice and had another great week last week. He continues to get better and better, and I believe Devin has too."
Nussmeier also believes Gardner is getting better in another new offensive system.
"You look at Devin's numbers and sometimes numbers can be misleading," Nussmeier said. "The guy is almost at 69% completion percentage, five touchdowns and four interceptions. Yeah, a couple of errors he'd like to have back, but I've said it before I've got to do some things better for him as well.
"I think it's unfair to say this guy or that guy is the problem."
Gardner finished Saturday's contest against Miami (Ohio) with 13 completions for 184 yards. He also had two touchdowns and one interception. The lone interception, both Brady Hoke and Nussmeier say, appeared to be tipped at the line of scrimmage which affected the trajectory of the ball intended for redshirt sophomore Jehu Chesson.
Morris, who played in the waning minutes of the game, had two passes dropped, one of which was for an easy touchdown, and rushed for 27 yards on a single carry.
He also led the offense down the field to score a field goal.
