Next DC, How bout Hoke?

With Durkin leaving there will be a large search for Michigan's next defensive coordinator. The main names I've see out there include Scott Shafer, Lance Anderson, Vic Fangio, Mattison, etc. But one name that I think is at least worth mentioning is Brady Hoke. Now, I know this idea is really off putting to many and the chances of this happening are remote at best. But, I still don't think it's the worst idea in the world.

Let me start by saying that I liked Hoke. Not as a head coach, but as a person I always thought he seemed like a good person. I have yet to hear anybody saying something negative about his character or his dedication to his players. Brady Hoke didn't just value skills but he helped players become well rounded individuals. Under Hoke the football team's grades increased and Hoke didn't hesitate to dismiss Frank Clark when he was charged with domestic assault. Hoke was a good person and I appreciate that mentality in sports. All players I've seen have talked about Hoke stood behind his players and even when fired many players supported Hoke.

Brady Hoke was unsuccessful as the head coach of Michigan. That's a fact that no one can dispute. However, when you look at his teams it was always the offense that was an issue. Never the defense. Under Hoke Michigan had many very good defenses. Michigan boasted top 20 defenses for much of Hoke's tenure. Whether we like to admit it or not, Hoke can coach defense. The line backing core as a whole regressed this year under Durkin, and next year the coach of the linebacking core will be even more vital as Michigan loses their top 4 linebackers. Hoke and Mattison could team up again as co-defensive coordinators to put together another solid group defensively. Hoke also has the added value of a great recruiter. Hoke pulled in guys like Peppers, Lordan Lewis, and Derrick Green (even if he's a bust he was still highly recruited out of high school and Hoke brought him to Ann Arbor). Hoke played a big part in getting many of the current players to Michigan and many of those guys who love to suit up for him again.

At first I thought that even though the idea was novel I couldn't imagine Hoke even being interested. But, the more I've thought about it the less crazy it seems. Hoke and Greg Mattison are good friends and the idea of Hoke accepting a position where we gets to reunite could be appealing. Hoke has professed his love for Michigan long before he was the head coach and he worked as an assistant coach at Michigan from 95-02. This provides Hoke with a nice transition back into coaching as he's missed this year.

Head coaches moving back to coordinator jobs far from uncommon Lane Kiffin, Ed Orgeron, and Luke Fickell all did it with success. So why not Hoke? Hoke is a Michigan man and as long as he's kept away from the offense then he could be a real asset on the Michigan sideline once again.
