Michigan 15 - Detroit 6
Last week, David McCormack and Mikie Schlosser scored four goals each on the way to a 16-9 victory over the Bellarmine Knights. Saturday night saw Schlosser add yet another goal to his 2015 resume after ripping an unassisted shot just over 90 seconds into the game.
David McCormack also added his fifth score of the season at the nine minute mark of the first quarter to put the Wolverines up 4-0.
However, it was last year's leading scorer, Ian King, who would go into a "beast mode" of his own and tally six goals against the Titans. These were his first six goals of the season and set the program record for scores in a game. His two assists also put King atop the record book with eight points in a game.
The first quarter belonged to Michigan, but Detroit wasn't ready to give up. Outscoring the Wolverines four goals to three in the second frame, Detroit went into the half down by a slim 8-5 margin.
But, as with last week, it was a powerful second half for Michigan. King led the way with three of his six goals, while Schlosser added his second of the game, and Brendan Gaughan and Riley Kennedy got on the stat sheet with their first scores of the season. Kyle Jackson, David Joseph, and Will Meter rounded out the scoring for the starters.
Face-off man, Brad Lott, was great again in a 14-of-23 effort, while the Titans' Damien Hicks went 9-of-21. Ground balls were a strong point for the Wolverines, as they nearly doubled up on the Titans 34 to 18. Michigan also won the turnover battle with 13 to Detroit's 17.
Gerald Logan was phenomenal once again and stopped ten balls on Detroit's 16 shots on goal.
The Wolverines are now 2-0 for the first time and will face a stiff challenge against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0) at 1:00 ET on February 21. The game will be played in Oosterbaan Field House in Ann Arbor. Stay tuned for my preview on Friday.
