Michigan 4 - ASU 1

The Wolverines win in The Valley of the Sun

The Wolverines made their first trip to Arizona to take on the Sun Devils at Gila River Arena. Zach Nagelvoort got the start between the pipes for Michigan in their only game of the weekend.

Dexter Dancs took the first penalty of the game when he was called for tripping at 1:55 but the Wolverines were able to kill off the power play. Nolan De Jong scored his first career goal, assisted by Brendan Warren and James Sanchez, to open up the scoring in the Glendale.

The Sun Devils got on the board after a mistake by Cecconi cost Michigan and Joe Lappin was able to put the puck past Nagelvoort at 15:35. Luke Martin and Joe Cecconi took back to back penalties giving ASU a 5 on 3 but the Wolverines were able to kill off both.

Arizona State took two penalties in first three minutes of the second period but Michigan was unable to score on their first chance with the man advantage.

The second man advantage was cut short when Brendan Warren was called for tripping making the game 4 on 4. After the 4 on 4 ended Will Lockwood came in on a breakaway and went bar down to give Michigan the 2-1 lead in the second period.

Jake Montgomery of ASU was called for high sticking at 9:13 giving the Maize and Blue their third power play of the period. Adam Winborg was able to capitalize on the man advantage giving the Wolverines a two goal lead making it 3-1.

Nagelvoort made a huge save on Brinson Pasichnuk to keep the two goal lead for the Wolverines going into the second intermission.

At 9:50 in the third period Will Lockwood got on the scoresheet again with a wonderful shorthanded to make it a three goal lead for Michigan. Will Lockwood was the games first star with his two goals helping the Wolverines to a 4-1 win.

Michigan dominated in the face-off circle winning 51 face-offs to ASU’s 24, they were also able to outshoot the Sun Devils 38-32. Zach Nagelvoort was outstanding in net making 31 saves and helping the Wolverines kill off eight penalties.
