Michigan Football Recruiting: 2016 OL Michael Onwenu Reaffirms Commitment to Wolverines

Four-star offensive line recruit Michael Onwenu flirted with Michigan State but reaffirmed on Tuesday that he'll be a Wolverine tomorrow.

Four-star offensive lineman Michael Onwenu (Detroit, MI) will sign with Michigan tomorrow on National Signing Day, he confirmed on the Cityballers National Signing Day Show on Tuesday night. Onwenu is 88th overall and the fourth-best offensive guard in the 2016 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, making him one of five current Michigan commitments ranked in the top 100. The Composite Rankings also list him as the best prospect from the state of Michigan.

Onwenu has been committed to the Wolverines since June 2, 2015, and, for much of the time since then, was believed to be solidly in the fold. However, things became a bit shaky two days after his official visit to Michigan when, on January 18, 2016, he was offered a scholarship by Michigan State. Onwenu followed that by taking an official visit to East Lansing the ensuing weekend, allegedly removing "Michigan commit" from his Twitter bio, and revealing that he would make his final decision on the Cityballers National Signing Day Show tonight. Whether Onwenu truly was having second thoughts about going to Michigan or just wanted to draw attention to the show, during which his fellow Cass Tech teammates also announced their decisions, remains unclear.

Either way, Onwenu will be a Wolverine.

This was important for Michigan because, not only is Onwenu a promising talent, Michigan has suffered attrition from that position in recent weeks after Michigan parted ways with Erik Swenson and Devery Hamilton flipped to Stanford. Losing Onwenu would have been a big blow, and losing him to an in-state rival would have been worse.

Michigan still has 25 commitments heading into National Signing Day with room for as many as 30 in its 2016 class. The bonanza tomorrow should be wild with 10 different targets or current commits making their final decisions throughout the day.
