Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke at Big Ten media days in Chicago, Illinois and passed on information about the 2016 season. Last campaign, the Wolverines finished 10-3 with a 6-2 Big Ten record.
The Wolverines have almost all the pieces for a successful 2016 season, except a quarterback. The job is up for grabs between Wilton Speight and John O’Korn, with Shane Morris falling behind.
"We are going to throw the balls out on August 8th and compete," Harbaugh said. "Fresh slate because quarterbacks can improve over the four months between spring practice and the start of training camp.
"We are looking for a guy who consistently can move the team the most and get us in the end zone. It’s going to take practice reps, scrimmage reps and team reps to define the guy who consistently moves the team without turning the ball over and make it the big blender."
Wait... What does Harbaugh mean by "big blender?"
O’Korn and Speight have been working hard to try and get the Michigan receivers on their side with private throwing sessions. The catch is that the two quarterbacks do not tell each other when they are throwing or who they are throwing with.
Here is how it goes down, according to Harbaugh:
Harbaugh: "Wilton Speight and John O’Korn, they try to get the receivers to throw with them."
John O’Korn: "Can you throw with me at two o’clock, but don’t tell Wilton that we are throwing."
Harbaugh: "Then Wilton is doing the same thing..."
Wilton Speight: "Hey can you come at seven, I need to get Jake, Amara, Jehu and Grant to come over at seven and... don’t tell John."
Harbaugh: "But one of the problems is one of the receivers lives with John, so he told John and John shows up at Wilton’s secret throwing sessions and Wilton shows up at John’s. I love it."
Regardless of how it all happens, Harbaugh loves the competition.
