Defensive end Chris Wormley, safety/linebacker Jabrill Peppers and corner back Jourdan Lewis have been placed on the 2016 Bednarik Award watch list.

The award is given to the top defensive player in the nation.

Peppers, who will be a junior in the classroom and a redshirt sophomore on the field, logged 45 tackles and 10 passes swatted away. He ran 18 time for two touchdowns, had eight receptions, eight kick returns and 17 punt returns. From Paramus Catholic High School in New Jersey, Peppers will make the switch from safety to linebacker for the 2016 season.

Lewis, a senior from Detroit Cass Technical in Michigan, had a season to remember in 2015. He was an All-American with 52 tackles and 20 passes defended.

Meanwhile, Wormley had 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks for the Maize and Blue. The senior from Whitmer High School in Ohio will play defensive end and defensive tackle for Michigan this season.

The award has been handed out to players since Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern in 1995. Since 2010, the winners have included Patrick Peterson (LSU), Tyrann Mathieu (LSU), Manti Te’o (Notre Dame), Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh), Scooby Wright III (Arizona) and Tyler Matakevich (Temple).

The semifinalists will be announced on October 31 and three finalists will be released on November 21. The winner will be announced on December 8, 2016.
