What to Watch for on National Signing Day

National Signing Day is (almost) here! Let’s break it down.

National Signing Day is finally here! For college football fans, this day is unofficially the start of the 2017 season. We finally get to see how the landscape of college football will change with the incoming freshmen and Michigan is a team that will be adding a ton of talent to their program.

You, however, as a diehard Michigan fan already know who the 27 commitments in the 2017 class are, so we are going to take a look at the remaining uncommitted targets.

5-Star DT Aubrey Solomon (Leesburg, GA)

A one-time Michigan commit, things seemed to be trending south with the 5-star after a video surfaced of Solomon saying some unflattering things about Michigan at the U.S. Army All-American game. HOWEVER, communication picked up after he apologized to the coaching staff and this recruitment has had a Maize and Blue tint ever since. With almost every crystal ball coming in for Michigan since January, things seem to be trending Michigan’s way. A sometimes impressionable kid, this recruitment looks like it will end in Michigan’s favor and give the Wolverines the big defensive tackle they need.

Announcement: 10 AM EST on ESPNU

4-Star LB Willie Gay (Starkville, MS)

Willie Gay has named Michigan has his publice leader multiple times throughout the fall, but things seem to be trending away from Michigan here. There are multiple people in his family that are in Michigan’s corner, but this seems to be a LSU/Mississippi State battle with Michigan lagging behind. An electric playmaker at linebacker, Gay would be a perfect fit within Michigan’s defense, but it seems he is bound to stay down south. Will mark this one in the ‘pleasant surprise’ folder if he decides to sign with Michigan.

Announcement: 10 AM EST

4-Star WR Nico Collins (Pinson, AL)

One of the more interesting recruitments as of late, Collins seemed to be trending to Georgia after being a Michigan lean since late summer. However, on the heels of a visit to Georgia this past weekend, a flood of Michigan crystal balls came in on the four-star prospect. Things seem to be trending back the way of the Maize and Blue and it seems again that it would be a shock to see Collins sign anywhere else.

Announcement: 2:30 PM EST

3-Star OT Mekhi Becton (Highland Springs, VA)

Another recruitment that has become a little hazy to read in the last month, Becton seemed to be Michigan’s to lose. Virginia Tech, though, has been on a tear in recruiting under second-yea head coach Justin Fuente, and they look like they’re going to be continuing that momentum. With a stranglehold on the crystal ball, the Hokies are the presumed favorite to land the massive OT. Michigan isn’t giving up yet, and will continue pushing for the commitment of the Virginia product. Still, look for the Hokies to win this recruitment.

Announcement: No scheduled announcement, set for Wednesday

UPDATE: Becton will announce at 9:30 AM EST tomorrow

So there you have it. Michigan is in really good shape with Collins and Solomon, and continue to be in play for Gay and Becton. With Ifeatu Melifonwu reaffirming with his pledge to Syracuse, Michigan will most likely only be adding two more commitments to its 27-man recruiting class. With all the talent already on board, adding a 5-star and another four-star receiver will be an almost perfect finish to the class.
