Maize tops Blue in Spring Game, 31-29

Kyle Seychel hit a field goal as time expired to give Team Maize a 31-29 victory in the Spring Game.

Team Maize defeated Team Blue in the Spring Game at Michigan Stadium, 31-29, behind a last second field goal by Kyle Seychel.

With 6:13 left in the first quarter, Brandon Peters completed a pass to Zach Gentry for a 55-yard touchdown to give Team Maize a 7-0 lead. The touchdown strike was Peters’ first pass of the game and the first Michigan touchdown of 2017.

Team Maize added to their lead on a 28-yard rushing score by Ty Isaac. Peters worked the team down the field, and Isaac finished the job to give Team Maize a 14-0 lead over Team Blue.

Just as the game looked to be slipping away from Team Blue, Karan Higdon got them on the broad with a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Quinn Nordin drilled the extra-point to cut Team Blue’s deficit to seven points. Nordin added to the score for Team Blue with a 48-yard field goal with 1:15 left in the first half to cut his team’s deficit to four points at halftime.

The stats provided for the media concluded at halftime.

Peters made his first mistake with 6:31 left in the third quarter, throwing an interception to Brandon Watson. Watson returned the interception to the house to give Team Blue a 17-14 lead.

After throwing a pick-six to lose the lead, Peters gained it back for Team Maize with 9:52 left in the game. The quarterback scrambles for 12 yards into the end zone, giving his team a four-point lead.

Wilton Speight threw his second interception of the game with 4:36 left in the contest, this time to Jordan Glasgow. The safety returned the interception 100 yards for a Team Maize touchdown, giving his squad a 28-17 lead.

True freshman wide receiver Tarik Black found himself in the end zone with 3:27 left in the game. John O’Korn, the backup quarterback for Team Blue, found Black in the end zone for about a 30-yard score. However, Team Maize still held a five-point lead.

John O’Korn gave it his best effort to lead Team Blue back with 2:04 left in the game and was successful. He found Eddie McDoom on a pass down field to the 13-yard line. Then, Karan Higdon ran the ball in from two yards out to give Team Blue a 29-28 lead with 1:38 left in the game.

On Team Maize’s final drive of the game, Peters hit Nate Schoenle for about a 50-yard gain. Peters continued to push his team down the field and set up a field goal opportunity for Kyle Seychel, which he converted from 31 yards to give Team Maize the victory.
