Baseball: it’s what college football fans pretend to enjoy while they wait for the fall. Thankfully, we have no shortage of hype videos to whet our gridiron appetites during the dry summer months.

But not all videos are created equal. In fact, there is an endless stream of really, really bad Michigan football hype videos out there (we’ll just assume Michigan film and media students aren’t behind them). Thankfully, Maize n’ Brew has your back. We trolled through the vast universe that is YouTube and emerged with a variety pack of videos for your viewing pleasure (or pain). Check them out, and throw your own review in the comments.

THE GOOD

Michigan Football Team 138: The New Age

An Anthony Hopkins voiceover, Michigan rivalry footage and a Transformers storyline: what could possibly go wrong? This is actually a solid effort to marry up a stirring movie trailer soundtrack to game film from Michigan’s most bitter rivalries. This one’s a little rough around the edges, but I’ll give it a “thumbs up” for storytelling. And it’s short. So, yeah, go ahead and watch it. It’s good. Good enough, at least.

College Football Pump-up: Michigan Wolverines Believer

If you love Michigan, you’ll like this video. It won’t change your life, but it’s an upbeat treatment of all things Michigan football. It’s optimistic, buoyant, and… wait for it… the video’s moments actually match up with the timing of the music. It’s good, in a cheery kind of way. And if you’re too cool for cheery, well, Urban Meyer could always use another minion in the Columbus fan base.

THE BAD ASS

Michigan Football Team 138: Dangerous

This won’t win a Webby (or whatever it is they give guys living in their moms’ basements who put these things together). But I really liked the content. You get flashes from signing day with some incoming (hopefully) stars, film from their high school heroics, and recent college gameday highlights from returning Wolverines talent. And I think calling next season’s Wolverines “dangerous” might be the most apt description yet. We’re anything but a sure thing given the departure of so many bodies for the NFL, but the cupboard remains full. We’re fast. We’re talented. We’re dangerous. Bad ass.

THE UGLY

Michigan Football Pump-up: A new beginning

At first, I thought I might be encountering some cinematic genius, here (by YouTuber standards, mind you). The creator actually had the stones to kick off this video by subjecting the Michigan faithful to last season’s biggest disappointments, slowly and painstakingly. This stuff still hurts, right? But it dug up a hunger for what I thought would be a dramatic, chest-pounding turnaround. Instead, I was dragged through drawn-out EPSN commentary and post-game pressers belaboring how Michigan failed to seize the day in 2016. The dramatic turnaround?: tired, hip-hop saturated highlights from 2016. So ugly.

My wife and son called and they want these nine minutes back. Yeah, nine minutes. It kicks off with some really good video of Coach Harbaugh sharing the character lessons that forge a Michigan Man. That’s after – and before – some decent video featuring Michael Jordan (you, know, of course, he didn’t actually play football in Ann Arbor, right?). Anyway, it devolves into a seemingly endless sea of… I’m just going to stop. I mean, the guy who made this is a fellow fan, after all.

LESSON LEARNED

Music: Go for gravitas, not funk. Anthony Hopkins sounding like Moses on Mount Sinai is what sets your video apart, not closet hip-hop.

Length: Less is more. No, less than that, even. Keep cutting, Scorcese. If it’s longer than a movie trailer, it’s too long. Go for impact, not length.

Have fun: I’m jabbing and critiquing, because I’m in the seats watching you play. But if you have the time and creativity to put your fandom to film, good on you. Know that you’re fair game for my snarky barbs, but who cares, right? Keep doing what you do, and Go Blue.
