On the recent episode of ‘Attack Each Day: The Harbaugh’s Podcast’ Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh spoke highly of two quarterbacks on the roster, Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton. McCaffrey will be a redshirt freshman while Milton is currently a true freshman.
“Is anybody more improved than Dylan McCaffrey?,” Jim Harbaugh said
“Getting the ball out of his hand and wanting to be good, you see it in him every day,” Jim’s father Jack chimed in.
“And moving the team,” Jim replied.
McCaffrey has bulked up and added weight to his frame since the beginning of last season and is poised to give Ole Miss transfer Shea Patterson a run for his money in the quarterback competition.
This may be the best quarterback battle heading into a season there has been in the Harbaugh era, as Joe Milton doesn’t have the typical freshman mindset. By all accounts to this point he seems to think he has a legitimate shot at seeing the field this season and is preparing as such.
“Joe Milton, brand new freshman quarterback, had a heck of a spring too,” Harbaugh said. “Every time you walk around the office, somebody made the joke that they should get him his own office because he’s trying to watch tape every single day. It’s pretty impressive.”
Shea Patterson will continue to be the heavy favorite to win the starting quarterback job, but he’s going to get pushed by McCaffrey and Milton (perhaps Peters too), and he will have to earn the job. If you believe what Jim Harbaugh is saying, the depth at the quarterback position sounds quite solid for the 2018 season.
