Michigan lands 2019 4-star in-state defensive tackle Mazi Smith

Harbaugh lands the seventh-ranked DT in the class of 2019.

Air Force v Michigan

2019 4-star defensive tackle Mazi Smith announced on Twitter he is committing to Michigan.

Smith, who is the seventh-ranked defensive tackle in the class of 2019, according to 247Sports, was also recruited heavily by Penn State, Michigan State, Notre Dame and others. Ultimately, the Grand Rapids East Kentwold star fell into the lap of the Wolverines and main recruiter defensive line coach Greg Mattison.

”Toughest thing I’ve ever done... but the trust I have in this program has out weighed any doubt that I have about them,” said Smith via Twitter. “I am comfortable and will stand firm in my decision to a part of this program. Thank you to everybody who has had a hand in developing me mentally, physically and emotionally. I have officially decided to continue my development on the campus of the University of Michigan.”

While defensive linemen Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich are both expected to be gone after 2018, Smith should join a star-studded front line with Aubrey Solomon, 5-star Chris Hinton and 4-star Stephen Herron. Like Gary and Solomon, Smith plays fast for a defensive tackle.

Michigan also secured the commitments of 4-star RB Zach Charbonnet and 3-star tight end Erick All Jr. on Sunday. The additions bring the Wolverines’ 2019 recruiting class to No. 10 in the country on 247Sports board, which now includes one 5-star recruit in Hinton, six 4-star recruits and seven 3-star recruits.

For all the worries over last year’s paltry 24th-ranked class, Harbaugh and Co. seem to be aggressive right out of the gate this recruiting season. The results of that aggression, at least for now, seem to be paying off.
