After the performance this past weekend in Florida at the NFA 7v7 National Championships, Michigan QB commit JJ McCarthy is officially a five-star recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
The La Grange Park (IL) native committed to Michigan on May 11 and currently holds 33 offers. His ceiling could be very high at the next level and has another two years to develop before college. In the meantime, his performance at last weekends event earned him ‘Alpha Dog’ honors and helped McCarthy reach five-star recruit level.
Here is one of his highlights from this past weekend.

McCarthy was evaluated by 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Allen Trieu, who recently compared him to a Drew Brees kind of quarterback.
“Lean frame right now. Right around the average for height at the position, but needs to fill in more in the coming years. Fantastic arm talent. Can make every throw on the field, is consistent with accuracy and placement and has clean mechanics. Smart, competitive kid who has excelled in big games and big situations” Trieu said. “Is not a big big running threat, but shows very good pocket presence, ability to escape the rush and make throws on the move. Passing skills and approach to the game scream multi-year college starter at a high-level, the main concern would be pure strength and adding bulk to his frame.”
The already 6-foot-2, 180 pound athlete is currently ranked No. 1 in the state of Illinois, No. 2 pro style QB and No. 13 overall in the 2021 recruiting cycle, according to 247 Sports. Michigan is currently at fifth overall in the 2021 recruiting rankings with two verbal commits.
