Weekend Game Guide: Week 2 Wonderland

It may be early yet, but the race for the Big Ten is shaping up

Dustin Johnston/Maize n Brew

Week one of the college football season was a little lean when it came to marquee matchups, but week two fixes that with the season’s first game between two Top-10 teams. In the Big Ten, we’ll start to find out which mid-level teams will actually look to jump into division title contention this season. Let’s dive right into this week’s games.

B1G Games to Watch

Purdue vs Vanderbilt. The Purdue Boilermakers and Vanderbilt Commodores are both looking for a win this week after losses in week one. Purdue lost to Nevada on a last-second 56-yard field goal, while got thumped by Georgia. Vegas expects Purdue to win this one, with the Boilermakers being favored by seven points at most books. The Boilermakers will have home field advantage here too, so look for Purdue to bounce back from their week one loss or else the wheels could be off in West Lafayette. This game is on Saturday, a Noon kickoff on BTN.

Maryland vs No. 21 Syracuse. Maryland and Syracuse both won their opening games last week, but both played lesser competition. The Orange topped Central Connecticut State by the score of 50-7, while the Terrapins wrecked Howard by the score of 79-0. This matchup lets both teams test exactly how good they are against an opponent closer to what they will see in their respective conferences. For Michigan fans, this game will also provide an early indicator of whether things really are on the upswing in College Park ahead of the Wolverines traveling there on November 2nd. This game kicks off Saturday at Noon on ESPN.

No. 25 Nebraska vs Colorado. Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on Fox, Nebraska and Colorado face off in what was previously an annual rivalry game for the Huskers and Buffs before Nebraska joined the Big Ten and Colorado joined the PAC-12. This 71st iteration of Colorado vs Nebraska features two teams measuring their jabs for the season. Nebraska needs to prove that their stumbles against South Alabama were just an aberration, while Colorado looks to keep building momentum after their rivalry win over Colorado State. Vegas has Nebraska at either -4 or -3.5, depending on where you look. In an otherwise meh 3:30 p.m. slot for the Big Ten, this game should be a good one to watch.

National Games to Watch

No. 12 Texas A&M vs No. 1 Clemson. If Nebraska and Colorado doesn’t hold your interest, this national matchup at 3:30 p.m. on ABC should be worth watching. Both teams are coming off easy victories in Week 1, and both will need to ratchet up the intensity for this SEC/ACC showdown. Clemson is favored by 17+ points, but Texas A&M will be hungry to prove that they’re a team to take seriously in the SEC West this season.

No. 6 LSU vs No. 9 Texas. The weekend’s sole matchup of two Top-10 teams, LSU and Texas rightfully take 7:30 p.m. slot on ABC this Saturday. Both teams cruised to wins last week, and both teams showcased high-flying offenses. LSU QB Joe Burrow completed all but four pass attempts en route to 278 yards in the air and 5 TDs. Texas QB Sam Ehlinger went 28-38 for 276 yards and 4 TDs. This game should feature a lot of offense, and will establish the winner as a CFP contender to keep an eye on the rest of the season.
