On this week’s Future Brew, Von Lozon and Anthony Broome discuss how important Caleb Houstan’s commitment is not only for the immediate roster when he arrives in Ann Arbor, but also the future of Michigan recruiting.

Von: Anthony, this is a really big pick up here, giving Michigan the No. 1 overall recruiting class here in 2021. I think this is a really big pick up for a couple reasons, obviously to get them the momentum in this recruiting class, maybe it’ll help out with a couple of those big-time centers that would really round out this class — like Efton Reid or Charles Bediako. They’ve already got a couple forwards and a couple guards — so a big man is definitely on the Christmas list for Juwan Howard and company. But this also fills a need at that position because you’ve got guys like Isaiah Livers who is gonna be gone after this season. And potentially Franz Wagner, who is another one of those guys who can guard multiple positions. So at the end of the day, really big pick up here and something Juwan Howard must’ve been really excited about.

Anthony: Yeah, it’s huge. We’ve talked about it several times here — when is Michigan going to land that elusive five-star that they’ve cast a wide net to get? And Houstan’s that guy. He’s the No. 8 overall player in the country. He did reclassify from 2022 to 2021, so he’ll be a little bit on the younger side. It’s funny — it’s not the first five-star commit, that was technically Isaiah Todd who committed to the program, and we know how that ended up. But now they have at least one more spot open in this 2021 class to go get one of those centers you were talking about. I’m glad you started with Isaiah Livers because as I’ve been watching Houstan’s game, I think he can be a higher-end version of that, or at least as a true freshman be what Isaiah Livers is now.
