Michigan’s offense needs a clear and concise voice, someone who holds others accountable and isn’t afraid to speak up in good times or bad. It appears that voice is starting quarterback Cade McNamara, who’s taken leaps and bounds in his leadership abilities since the 2020 season ended.
“Cade’s leadership, since I’ve been here, I haven’t seen a quarterback really take charge like he has,” offensive tackle Ryan Hayes told the media on Friday. “He’s really trying to lead, he’s really putting that effort in, he’s not afraid to tell you when you need something or he wants something from you. So it’s been nice to have. Nice change.”
Hayes mentioned that in prior years when teammates aren’t doing what they’re supposed to be doing there wasn’t someone at quarterback who stepped up to address issues that needed to be corrected. “Nobody’s really stepped into that role to get everyone together. Different groups have, but he really tries to get the offense together as a unit,” Hayes said.
Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson echoed Hayes’ comments a few weeks back, noting that McNamara is the rock of Michigan’s offense.
“He’s really stepped up. I’ve seen a big difference in him from last year this time of year and now. Even in our walkthroughs. We have player-led walkthroughs — he’s stepping up and having that voice in there,” Hutchinson said. “I think it’s good to have a solidifying voice on the offensive side. We haven’t had that in a while and I think it’s good that Cade is in there. He’s kind of the rock of the offense right now.”
