Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NCAA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Michigan Wolverines fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Michigan Wolverines are 2023 national champions and it was quite the historic season for the program. It was Michigan’s first outright national championship since 1948. Their most recent national championship was a split title in 1997 with Nebraska.

With Michigan’s championship in mind, we asked fans this week a couple of questions about how impactful Team 144 was.

Fans feel the 2023 Michigan team is the best of the four-team College Football Playoff era. Michigan received 50 percent of the vote while Joe Burrow’s 2019 LSU team garnered 31 percent and the 2022 Georgia team received 17 percent.

We also asked which Michigan team was better — the 2023 team or the 1997 team.

86 percent of fans surveyed feel the 2023 Michigan team was better than the 1997 Michigan team. The 1997 Michigan team finished 12-0 with a 21-16 win over Washington State in the Rose Bowl. Michigan went 15-0 while beating Alabama in the Rose Bowl and Washington in the national championship. Both teams have players who will be Michigan legends for eternity — the ‘97 team had players such as Charles Woodson and Brian Griese, and the 2023 team has legends like J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum, Kris Jenkins, and Mike Sainristil among others. You really can’t go wrong either way, but it’s apparent that Michigan fans feel strongly that the 2023 Michigan team is THE TEAM.
