Shocking news is coming out of Ann Arbor this morning as Michigan basketball Head Coach John Beilein has signed a five-year contract to become the Cleveland Cavalier’s new head coach according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
As with any Woj bomb (this being a Woj nuke with how out of the blue it was), Twitter erupted into a frenzy after this story broke.
Michigan Basketball’s Twitter page gets the ball rolling with the recap of Beilein’s incredible run:
Thank you, @JohnBeilein, for everything you did for Michigan.

BTN’s Michigan page also expressed their thanks to the coach who resurrected this program:
So many memories we'll never forget.

You are the man, @JohnBeilein, and thanks for all you did for @umichbball. pic.twitter.com/sQg7HHPBiM
Potentially the best player from Beilein’s career, Trey Burke, congratulated Beilein on the big hire:
Congrats Coach B! @JohnBeilein 〽️ https://t.co/PTFNNbtLlg

Another former player, Stu Douglass, a member of John Beilein’s team from 2008-2012, was as stunned as anyone:
Holy shit

One of the best follows on Michigan Twitter, Scott Bell calls for Michigan to retire... something in his honor:
John Beilein is a saint. He doesn’t have a number, so his jersey can’t be retired, but can we retire a squirt gun or something?
— Scott Bell (@sbell021) May 13, 2019
That man resurrected a long-dormant Michigan basketball program and did it the right way in an era where basically everyone else does it the wrong way.
Live TV could never show a moment of shock any clearer. Here was Bruce Bowen on The Jump on ESPN this morning as the news broke:

The news was transcendent across the four letter network as Michigan grad Adam Schefter was left as speechless as anyone:
Welp..... https://t.co/vj8tlKqyg4

Andy Katz, a Big Ten and college basketball analyst, praised Beilein and recapped his Michigan career in his post:
Beilein is responsible for taking the @umichbball program to national elite status again. What a run he has had in Ann Arbor. Two national title games. A number of NBA draft picks. Fundamentals. Development. Clean, ethical program with high character. https://t.co/LaK3mAx5cq

Another College Basketball Insider, Jon Rothenstein added this interesting tidbit as to how the conversation could have started in Cleveland’s front office:
Massive news.

Cavs assistant GM Mike Gansey played for Beilein at West Virginia. https://t.co/6wwYJgJLAz
Bomani Jones tried to justify John Beilein’s decision and added a bit of hesitation to what he had done:
only way i take that job if i'm beilein is if i plan to retire in five years. no reason to expect dan gilbert to extend him cuz he doesn't extend anyone at the coach or gm level.
— bomani (@bomani_jones) May 13, 2019
Sports researcher Paul Hembekides dropped some knowledge about just how good Beilein was at Michigan:
Most Tournament wins since 2013
— Paul Hembekides (@PaulHembo) May 13, 2019

John Calipari (18)
Mike Krzyzewski (18)
