Durkin was brought in last winter under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh to run the defense and coach the linebackers. The Wolverines had the fourth-ranked total defense in the country in 2015 behind Boston College, Alabama and Wisconsin.
Under Durkin, Michigan had three consecutive shutouts against BYU, Maryland and Northwestern, the first time a feat such as that had been done in Ann Arbor in three decades.
Prior to Michigan, Durkin coached at Bowling Green, Stanford and Florida, where he was named interim head coach after Will Muschamp was fired prior to the bowl game.
