The Michigan Wolverines (7-0, 4-0 B1G) take their show on the road this week for a revenge trip and showdown with the rival Michigan State Spartans (2-5, 0-3 B1G) on Saturday afternoon in East Lansing.
This edition features two teams heading in opposite directions with the Wolverines building off of their strong debut under Jim Harbaugh last season and launching themselves into the College Football Playoff race, while the Spartans have followed up a CFP appearance with an uncharacteristic 2-5 start to the season and a major downward spiral.
The Wolverines have been dominant all season long and this week’s game has the ingredients to get extremely ugly. Michigan has not forgot about the botched snap that caused them to blow last year’s win over the Spartans and the team they face on Saturday is one of their rival’s worst in recent memory.
MSU has been unable to get it going this year after losing a lot of talent to the NFL and playing the game of quarterback roulette that has featured Tyler O’Connor, Brian Lewerke and Damion Terry. Their lines have been beaten soundly on both sides of the football and that is a matchup that is definitely in Michigan’s favor.
The Spartans’ best shot in this game, which they will no doubt be ready for, is to force Wilton Speight to make several bad decisions and to find a way to get their offense going, which is a task that Michigan has not allowed any teams on their schedule to do so far.
Rivalry games are unpredictable and one would expect the Spartans to come out swinging and putting everything they have into this game in a lost season, so Michigan has to be ready to be the hammer and not the nail in this game.
Michigan is too talented on both sides of the ball and many in their locker room are hungry to get revenge for last year, so look for the Wolverines to make a statement on Saturday afternoon and take the state back as theirs.
