Freep Column: Spring Game brings QB battle to the forefront

Gather round, class. Let’s chat about the quarterback situation.

The Michigan spring game probably did not tell us a whole lot, but it also could have pointed out the biggest storyline to watch in fall camp and heading into the opener against Florida.

Our column this week for the Free Press discusses how it appears we have a legitimate quarterback battle on our hands between Wilton Speight and Brandon Peters.

Here’s an excerpt from this week’s piece:

Speight will likely enter fall camp as the favorite to have the starting job, as he should. He performed at a high level in 2016 until a shoulder injury. But a conversation about who is the best guy for this team in 2017 is worth considering.

Jim Harbaugh has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes picking a starting quarterback and those who think he would be loyal to Speight because of his experience are mistaken. Harbaugh is an advocate of the best players being on the field at all times.
