Michigan bumped to No. 4 in updated CFP rankings

Michigan now holds a projected spot in the College Football Playoff.

The selection committee ranked the Wolverines No. 4 in the updated rankings released Tuesday night.

Jim Harbaugh’s relentless bunch obliterated No. 14 Penn State 42-7 last Saturday to propel them into the top-4. The Nittany Lions tumbled to No. 20.

This is the highest CFP ranking for this team since reaching third in 2016.

Alabama continues its reign atop the poll, leading No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame. Georgia and Oklahoma trail right behind Michigan at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Previous opponents — No. 18 Michigan State and PSU — provide the Wolverines big-win value.

Ohio State and Iowa also both made the top-25, coming in at No. 10 and No. 21, respectively.

After three weeks of high-profile matchups, the Maize and Blue get a breather Saturday at Rutgers (3:30 p.m., BTN). After that, the final home game is Nov. 17 against Indiana.

All roads lead to Columbus for a bout with the Buckeyes on Nov. 24.
