Report: Michigan WR coach Jim McElwain to be next HC at Central Michigan

The Wolverines will have a coaching vacancy, it appears.

According to Central Michigan Life’s Evan Petzold, Michigan wide receivers coach Jim McElwain will become the next head coach of the Central Michigan Chippewas.

A press conference to introduce McElwain as head coach is planned for 11 a.m. Monday in Mt. Pleasant, according to Petzold.

It was reported earlier this week McElwain emerged as a candidate for the job at CMU. Now, Michigan has a coaching vacancy to fill.

McElwain did superb work with Michigan’s wide receivers this season. The group had just three touchdowns all of last year, and none after Week 2, but it was a completely different story in 2018. Nico Collins led the way with 552 receiving yards and six touchdowns, and Donovan Peoples-Jones recorded 541 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Add in a good true freshman season from former 2-star recruit Ronnie Bell (145 receiving yards, two touchdowns) and McElwain was able to turn an inconsistent group from a year ago into a strength for the Wolverines.

As for CMU, my alma mater, this is a great hire. Having a proven coach become the head coach of a non-Power 5 school doesn’t happen every day, so this is a fantastic hire by CMU.

This story is still developing.
