Report: Former Florida head coach Jim McElwain joining Michigan’s staff

Two Jim’s, One Offense: A Michigan Football Story. Coming soon to theaters everywhere.

NCAA Football: Florida at Michigan Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

According to multiple reports, Jim Harbaugh is hiring former Florida head coach and Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain as the 10th assistant coach on staff.

It isn’t clear what McElwain’s role will be yet, but he is taking over for the recently-departed Dan Enos. He has coached quarterbacks and wide receivers in the past, so it wouldn’t be out of reach to assume he work with at least one of those positions. Pep Hamilton is currently listed as the QB/WR coach in the Michigan staff directory, but that could change at any time, and very well might be changing soon.

This is a big hire for Harbaugh. It didn’t work out for McElwain in Florida, even though he was the SEC Coach of the Year in 2015, but he has always been a great offensive-minded coach; just as long as he’s not the head coach.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
