The Amway Coaches Poll has released its preseason edition of the rankings, placing the Michigan Wolverines at No. 14 nationally.
The Wolverines were placed two spots below in-state rival Michigan State who came in at 12, and 11 spots below archival Ohio State at No. 3.
Michigan’s first opponent, Notre Dame, are ranked 11 on the list.
The Big Ten is ranked as follows:
3. Ohio State
7. Wisconsin
9. Penn State
12. Michigan State
14. Michigan
What can be taken away from this ranking? Well, despite the fact the official college football playoff rankings will not be released until well into the season, it really highlights the gauntlet of a schedule the Wolverines play this year.
Now whether or not the four teams in the Big Ten ranked above Michigan live up to their preseason hype remains to be seen. But what is certain is Michigan will have to play two of those four teams on the road — Michigan State and Ohio State. Penn State and Wisconsin will be no cakewalk either.
The other main source of collegiate ranking — the AP Poll — is set to be released Aug. 20.
