Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke to reporters during his Monday press conference from Schembechler Hall in Ann Arbor ahead of this weekend’s showdown with Notre Dame. Here is the full recap of topics touched on by him coming out of the loss to Penn State and looking ahead.
- Harbaugh said there were some calls that he was unhappy with on Saturday, but that sometimes life isn’t fair (‘The only fair is the county fair’) and that they are not making any excuses.
- As far as wide receiver Ronnie Bell goes, Harbaugh called him one of the most mentally tough players he has ever coached and that “we would take as many Ronnie Bells as possible.”
- Harbaugh likes how his tight end group is coming along and said that the sky is the limit for freshman tight end Erick All.
- Players are ‘responding’ to a quick turnaround after a tough loss and another big game coming. “This morning was a beehive of activity.” The players that did not play had a practice on Monday morning. He also called the Penn State game “a tough loss” and is looking forward to “coming back against a very good opponent.”
- On Shea Patterson’s play at quarterback: “I think Shea’s playing great football, heroic even. Been really pleased. When he’s really into it, his whole demeanor in the game. Excited, confident. Likes being in that big atmosphere.”
- Harbaugh played the attitude and development of defensive end Kwity Paye.
- There are no long-term goals for this year other than “Win our next game. That’s our goal. We have a really good plan for this week. Practice it, go out an execute. Feel like our team is optimistic as ever that we’re hitting our stride.”
- Michigan felt it was necessary to hide their signals with the Block M flags on Saturday night.
- Harbaugh called the Notre Dame rivalry a “big game” and said that there has been discussions about resuming the series and he would be in favor of it. Saturday is currently the last scheduled game between the Wolverines and Irish.
- Harbaugh called out the Michigan student by name who wrote a nasty email to Ronnie Bell. (more in the link attached)
- On fan criticisms: “It’s what goes on. People who don’t really know what it’s like to be a player or professional in the arena.” He dropped a sticks and stones reference.
- Jordan Glasgow has been a “jackhammer at all times.”
- Harbaugh goes back to social media and said that his players do not have to take that to heart. What other people think is their business.
- Back to Patterson, Harbaugh said “game in and game out, consistently good” about his performances.
- Finished the presser with a tip of the cap to linebacker Josh Uche for his continued improvement.
