Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh has expressed an interest in playing a game overseas in the past, and now it appears that desire is inching closer to being a reality.
At Big Ten Media Days, Harbaugh said that an announcement will be happening soon on that front.
“I think we’re really close to announcing, actually, playing another team on foreign soil,” Harbaugh said. “I think there’s something really imminent. There will be an announcement soon on that.”
Harbaugh said he wasn’t ready to announce where the game will be played or who the opponent will be, and it remains to be seen what year this game will be played in, as Michigan doesn’t have an open date on their schedule until 2022.
This topic came up when a media member asked Harbaugh if he would be interested in playing in Mexico City, to which Harbaugh replied that sounded like a good idea. “Yes, Mexico City would be great,” Harbaugh said. “Yeah, you know, we like to travel.”
The other obvious pick for a game on foreign soil would be London, England. The NFL has played games in London for the better part of a decade, and Major League Baseball had an incredibly successful tilt there when the Red Sox and Yankees squared off in what was an action packed two-game series last month. The support for American sports exists across the pond, and in Mexico as well.
Where do you think Michigan is headed?
