It was a day to forget in Madison for the Michigan Wolverines, as the Wisconsin Badgers really took it to them, and never let up.
Wisconsin received the ball on offense first and set the tone. Methodically driving down the field with running back phenom Jonathon Taylor. A 12 play, 75-yard drive featuring 8 rushes by Taylor ended with a 1-yard score by the RB.
Michigan’s first play on offense netted big yardage and was their best play of the first half, and they looked poised to score after quarterback Shea Patterson scrambled and found him along the sidelines for a 68-yard gain.

Unfortunately for Michigan, after a time out, the very next play resulted in a fumble on Ben Mason’s first carry of the season.

A controversial overturn on what looked like a clear big gain catch by Ronnie Bell led to a Michigan punt, which in turn led to Taylor taking a 72-yard run to the house to put Wisconsin up 14-0.

Things didn’t get any better for Michigan in the second quarter, and the game remained firmly in Wisconsin’s control in all ways. A 15-play, 80-yard drive, eating up a whooping 8:29 ended with a 4th and Goal sneak by QB Jack Coan at the 1, putting the Badgers up 21-0.

In the second quarter Taylor went to the medical tent due to cramps and sat out much of the quarter, but in all, the Badgers went up 28-0 at the half. Patterson was just 5-of-14 for 87 yards and an INT. Michigan rushed for 9 yards, while Wisconsin rushed for 200. To make matters worse, Patterson appeared to suffer some sort of injury on the last drive of the half. Patterson’s injury paved the way for Dylan McCaffrey to come in for the long haul.

Taylor returned in the second half for Wisconsin, and the Badgers kept rolling, while nothing positive transpired for Michigan. Wisconsin added a 2-yard John Chernal TD run to go up 35-0 before Michigan ultimately put points on the board.
On Michigan’s scoring drive, one which McCaffrey led them down the field on, he was taken out of the game after receiving a brutal hit that was ruled targeting.

Shea Patterson had to come back in, and he threw a touchdown pass to Sean McKeon. The score came with a price, McKeon was injured on the play and had to head to the locker room. The subsequent 2-point conversion grab by Tarik Black made it 35-8 Wisconsin.

Late in the 4th the Wolverines added another score on a drive that saw the passing game open up a bit more and start to utilize 4 wide receiver sets. On 4th down Patterson bought time and found Peoples-Jones in the back of the end zone for the score. After a failed 2-point attempt, the score was 35-14 Wisconsin, and that’s what it remained until the final whistle.
Michigan falls to 2-1 on the season and will face Rutgers at the Big House next Saturday.
