Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh just left the podium after the 27-24 loss to Michigan State. Here’s a quick recap from what he had to say after the game.

  • Defensively, Harbaugh says Michigan State played a little differently up front early and was able to get tackles for loss. Says both sides of the statistics were even throughout the game.
  • Harbaugh says that MSU was getting behind the defense and was a huge difference in the game. Says they were making adjustments and got by on double moves, as well.
  • Harbaugh thought the Hassan Haskins wildcat throw was a good playcall, but needed more arc on the throw.
  • Both sides “play extremely hard” and it’s a big game and both teams were emotional in the rivalry game.
  • Harbaugh says that “the team is going to own this” and congratulated Michigan State on the victory. This is “a high character team” and he believes they will continue to strive to be a lot better.
  • Harbaugh thought MSU was a good team coming into the game but that seven turnovers last week was impossible to win with. Credits them for handling the ball on Saturday and finding a way to win. Michigan did not finish drives the way they hoped they could.
  • “We’ve got to look at all facets” of the team after the loss on Saturday
  • Harbaugh said that Joe Milton was a little too quick to bring the ball down early in the game, but thought that he settled in as the game went on. Just did not finish drives the way that they wanted to and were not in rhythm.
  • In terms of lack of finishing, Harbaugh feels like Michigan State tackled well and that the Wolverines were not able to get yards after the catch.
  • Cam McGrone wanted to finish the game, but doctors held him out the second half of the game.
  • Harbaugh thought his team played hard and played physical. The challenge of playing without fans was known already, but did not cite it as an excuse.
  • Negative x-rays after the game for Jalen Mayfield after an injury.
  • Michigan wasn’t nearly as efficient on third down “as they wanted to be” when asked about being in third and long situations.
  • Penalties “played a big factor in the game.” Team will continue to emphasize clean football in prep the rest of the season. Too many penalties that extended drives.

Next up for Michigan is the Indiana Hoosiers in a noon kickoff next Saturday in Bloomington.
