The quarterback situation at Michigan has seemingly gotten a bit clearer

The fight for the starting job has taken a turn.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 28 Rutgers at Michigan

It has been a crazy Wednesday in the college football world with the return of the Big Ten season, which is set to kickoff the weekend of Oct. 24. However, there have been some notable developments in recent days with the Michigan Wolverines, as well.

Maize n Brew has confirmed that Joe Milton is the leader in the clubhouse to start at quarterback for Michigan when the season begins and that Cade McNamara has made a “serious push” for the No. 2 job, according to a source. What that means for Dylan McCaffrey remains to be seen but both Michael Spath of Sports Illustrated and Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider ($) believe that a decision on what comes next there could be made soon.

We have long speculated that the runner-up in the Milton/McCaffrey battle may wind up transferring with multiple years of eligibility remaining. Given that an eight-game season might not be all that appealing to someone who may not get the reps they were hoping for, a departure might not be all that surprising. However, McCaffrey is not in the transfer portal as of this afternoon per a conversation with someone who has access to it.

As far as other players who have opted out or may opt out, all that has been made known so far is that Jalen Mayfield will be sticking with the NFL Draft preparation per Orion Sang of The Detroit News.

We will have more on this situation as it develops.
