The internet is never a kind place.

In a time full of fluidity in reports from both local and national reporters on the future of Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football program, clarity was finally reached as Nick Baumgardner, Adam Schefter, and Sam Webb reported that Harbaugh had inked a new 5-year deal.

Social media exploded with reaction as the news was finalized with a large amount of disdain and little credit because of how long this process took, the pure nature of retaining a head coach who is 0-5 against Ohio State, and the opportunity for Harbaugh to turn pro if he garnered interest. Here are some of the highlights.

The Michigan Wolverines’ biggest rival responded in a subtle but profound way by liking a Bleacher Report tweet announcing the extension.

One fan praised Harbaugh for sticking around in the tough times with this controversial statement:

Barstool President and avid Michigan fan Dave Portnoy couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the news:

Michigan reporter Brandon Brown pointed out where the pay cut put Harbaugh among coaches in the Big Ten in base salary.

AP writer Ralph Russo couldn’t believe that this move was made while a coach who was a National Championship runner-up was canned a few weeks back.

Dan Leach, a host on 97.1 The Ticket was anything but pleased at the news of Harbaugh sticking around.

Former Wolverine defensive end who played under Harbaugh was excited about the move:

The decision to keep Harbaugh around was a polarizing one. There is going to be a wide array of opinions about the program and the head coach going forward and everything that he does will be under a microscope for the remainder of his tenure in Ann Arbor.
