Now that Jim Harbaugh is locked in and we are a Baltimore Ravens playoff elimination away from Mike Macdonald becoming Michigan’s new defensive coordinator, things are starting to move on the assistant coach front. The latest update comes from a handful of updates from both 247Sports and Rivals (both subscription sites), who say that cornerbacks coach Mike Zordich is weighing his options and is unlikely to return.
Zordich was one of six Michigan assistants to see his contract expire earlier this week. He becomes the second member of Harbaugh’s staff in as many weeks to walk out the door with quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels also not being retained.
Zordich has been on Michigan’s coaching staff in the role of coaching the corners all six seasons under Harbaugh, the first five of which saw the Wolverines as a top-10 passing defense each year.
Both the Michigan 247Sports and Rivals sites are also reporting interest in former Michigan running back Mike Hart in a position on the coaching staff. He is currently the assistant head coach and running backs coach at Indiana under Tom Allen but is being courted for a similar position. In this scenario, the word is that Jay Harbaugh would slide over to special teams full-time.
Now that the college season is officially over and the Harbaugh extension is behind us, expect more news as this search continues to roll along. There is still quite a bit to sort out before moving forward with preparation for the 2021 season, so stay tuned.
