WATCH: Freshman Feature Episode 3 - Junior Colson

Breaking down the stats, metrics, scouting, projection, and more for the true freshman linebacker

What if you beefed up Jabrill Peppers by 20 pounds or so and added a few inches? This is essentially what you have with the Michigan Wolverines highest rated linebacker in the class of 2021, Junior Colson. Colson comes in to the Wolverines as a “jumbo” hybrid space player. Usually Michigan has taken these players that fall more on the “safety” side of the safety-linebacker threshold. Junior Colson is definitely a linebacker, but has the level of athleticism and skillset necessary to play in space.

The Ravenswood, Tennessee native started his career as a WR, grew out of that position, and became a ferocious outside linebacker. With great awareness in pass coverage, sideline to sideline capabiliies, and affinity as a pass rusher, Colson brings a unique skillset taht should feel right at home with a defense that will likely rely on a plethora of quasi-edge rushers who can also drop back into coverage to confuse opposing offenses.

Add in the fact that Colson has seemingly impressed thus far in spring practice, and it could spell a perfect fit for early playing time at a position that may be the youngest for this upcoming year. He’s an exciting prospect to watch, and fans may not have to wait long to see the sort of impact he can have on the field.
