Michigan Wolverines linebacker Cornell Wheeler has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to multiple media reports. Wheeler did not see game action during his true freshman season with the team in 2020.
Wheeler, a three-star prospect out of West Bloomfield, Michigan, was the No. 471 player and 22nd-ranked linebacker in the 2020 class. He committed to the program on Sept. 25, 2018, and signed his letter of intent with the program in Dec. 2019.
Given the free year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wheeler has four years of eligibility remaining wherever he decides to transfer.
Defections from defensive players have been a reoccurring theme this offseason with Michigan’s total facelift on that side of the ball. Wheeler was recruited to play a role in Don Brown’s defense, but the longtime coordinator was let go at the end of the 2020 season. Former Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Mike Macdonald was hired to replace Brown and has spent the better part of the offseason installing a brand new scheme.
