Matt Schembechler, the adopted son of former Michigan Wolverines head football coach Bo Schembechler, will be present at a news conference on Thursday going public that he is among the victims of Dr. Robert Anderson’s sexual abuse in Ann Arbor.
A news release from his attorney states that Schembechler will “set the record straight regarding his own abuse” and will share with the public his father’s “failure to protect him and other athletes.” He says that he was abused when he was 10 and that he shared this with his late father and former athletic director Don Canham.
He will be joined by his attorney and two former Michigan football players to discuss their experiences.
Joining Schembechler will be Daniel Kwiatkowski, an offensive lineman at Michigan from 1977-79 and Gilvanni Johnson, a wideout from 1982-86. The news release states that Kwiatkowski was abused by Anderson four times and Johnson was victimized 15 times.
Kwiatkowski and Johnson have also come forward as two of the anonymous sources in the WilmerHale report, which was released last month. The 240-page independent investigation found that hundreds were victimized by Anderson in his four decades at Michigan. Both said that they raised concerns about Anderson to Bo Schembechler and made him aware of what was going on.
According to the Detroit News, over 800 men have accused Anderson of sexual abuse.
Last week, current head football coach Jim Harbaugh responded to conversations about Bo Schembechler’s legacy, where he said the man he knew would not sit on information if he had knowledge of something.
“Well, I can tell you this,” Harbaugh said. “Bo Schembechler — there was nothing that I saw during the times I was a kid here, my dad was on the staff, or when I played here — he never sat on anything. He never procrastinated anything. I mean, he took care of it before the sun went down. That’s the Bo Schembechler that I know.
“Nothing was ever swept under the rug or ignored. He addressed everything in a timely fashion. That’s the Bo Schembechler that I know.”
Matt Schembechler was one of three sons adopted by Bo after he married his first wife, Millie, in 1968. Each of the three boys was from a previous relationship that Millie had before she married Bo.
Matt Schembechler sued his father, the University of Michigan, campus police and others in Jan. 1999 when he claimed they sabotaged his plans to create souvenirs from the old bleachers at Michigan Stadium. The suit never went anywhere and was thrown out months later in federal court.
