Standing at 6-foot-6, 2020 4-star quarterback Jay Butterfield is one tall high school junior.

The Brentwood, California native was in attendance for the Michigan Wolverines’ win over the Wisconsin Badgers last weekend. It was his first time in Ann Arbor, and he told Maize n Brew his first ever trip to U-M was a “great” one.

“It was a great trip. The Big House was awesome,” Butterfield said. “Had a chance to tour the facility, watch practice and meet with coach Harbaugh and Hamilton. It was a great trip overall.”

During his time in Ann Arbor, Butterfield was able to spend time with head coach Jim Harbaugh and passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton, watch a practice and tour the facility. But his favorite part? That’s a clown question, bro.

“It’s hard to beat the game day atmosphere and the 111,360 (people) at the Big House,” he said.

The fact he knew the exact number of people at the Big House last Saturday is impressive — perhaps the crowd had a lasting impression on him.

But regardless, the young signal caller has not made an official “list” yet, but he said the Wolverines will be on the list once he creates it after his high school season.

“I haven’t really created a list yet,” Butterfield said. “I have mainly been focused on (my team’s) season and accomplishing our team goals. When I sit down with my family and coaches after the season and take some official visits, I will start making a list. Michigan will be up on the list.”

One interesting factoid that could make a lasting impact in this recruitment is the fact that Butterfield’s high school coach is one of Chris Partridge's cousins. He finally got the chance to meet Michigan’s safeties and special teams coach.

“It was great to finally meet coach Partridge and talk to him a little bit. He is a really good guy,” he said.

I’m not sure how much Partridge will be involved with recruiting Butterfield, but having a connection like that never hurts.

Butterfield is the No. 2 pro-style quarterback, No. 8 player in California and No. 46 overall player in the 2020 class, according to 247Sports’ composite. His other notable offers include Oregon, Tennessee, Washington State and Colorado.
